This is one of the few erotica novels that takes the little things into account--like reality. When done right, realistic characters and relationships are very hot--and let me tell you, this book is HOT.

The plot is a familiar one--the virgin female is looking to lose that status and maybe find love along the way--only in this book she does so without engaging in behavior that would get a normal person killed. The female lead does not pass out drunk and then wakes up pantsless in a hotel room with beige everywhere. Instead, she has an adult conversation with her potential dom before they engage in hot and sexy playtime.

The dialog is thoughtful and realistic. There are no inner goddesses doing the dance of the seven veils. Instead we have two responsible adults going on a journey together (and that journey involves lots of hot, hot sex).

I will recommend this book to all my friends who liked 50 Shades of Grey. Taming School hits upon a lot of the same themes, only the reader isn't left with the burning desire to strangle the female lead.

This book had me screaming "green" by the end. If 50 Shades left you cold, you should try this one.

Educational and Hot

When reading 50 Shades, I felt as though the author had no clue what it was like to be in the Kink Community. She created a character with control issues, mommy issues, and a massive overprotectiveness complex, and romanticized him into a dark Prince Charming. Ms. De Soto has not done that. She's taken a Peter and Kat and written them together in a way that can make you identify with each character on their own, and desperate to read more about the scenes between the two of them. She writes as a true Kinkster, knowing the inner workings of the community, showing it for what it is, and not creating some fantasy world that doesn't exist. This is a great educational read for those in the community, and those who are interested, but just as inexperienced as Kat. Not to mention, it is tantalizing, scandalous, and down right Hot!

I typically don't read a lot of erotica, but I couldn't put this story down. It was filled with dialogue that felt real, like conversations I've had with people in the moment when no one knows what will happen next, but we both want to find out. It was also very hot to read. The authors description of pain and pleasure together, and her delving into many aspects of S&M, kink, relationships and sensuality are vivid. The final scene is both provocative, tender and the perfect climax to the story (no pun intended).

Practical book on time series econometrics

I am a Financial Engineer working primarily in risk management. Over the past few months I've had to study up on time series-related topics (both GARCH and cointegration-based analyses). This book is excellent for someone who needs to find time-series information and then apply it to a problem in a hurry. The explanations are clear and intuitive, yet mathematically precise. There are plenty of examples on how to apply techniques to real world problems, including lucid discussions of the proper statistical tests to use for the various methodologies.

Like many engineers, I often find myself scrambling to find a good source for a model or system component I will have to design, usually under tight time constraints. This is a perfect example of the type of textbook I always hope to find when starting such a task.

Quite good but...

OK, the book is not that bad, it explains the theory clearly BUT it is "applied" and there is no solutions to the exercise books in the authors webpage (although they do include the data sets for the exercises). I know it's common nowadays to edit books with math exercises without a solutions manual (or at least a pdf file online) but it doesn't change anything.

So yes, it's a good book to read, but how will you be sure you understood what you've read if you can practice it?

Second, besides Enders makes things in simple way, the explanation is "digest-able" for people with less background in math or linear algebra and for those who eagerly want to know what time series really is. Third, Enders's book is an oasis for people who devote his/her life for research, and also for academic world as well as graduate students. About the Author

Denis Wood, PhD, curated the award-winning Power of Maps exhibition for the Smithsonian and writes widely about maps. A former professor of design at North Carolina State University, Wood is currently an independent scholar living in Raleigh, North Carolina.

John Fels, PhD, until his death in 2014, was Adjunct Associate Professor in the Graduate GIS Faculty at North Carolina State University. He worked as a professional cartographer with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and as a freelance cartographic designer and consultant, and developed and taught the core design curriculum in the Cartography Program at Sir Sandford Fleming College in Ontario. Dr. Fels was the author of the North Carolina Watersheds map and also coauthor (with Denis Wood) of The Natures of Maps.�

John Krygier, PhD, teaches in the Department of Geology and Geography at Ohio Wesleyan University, with teaching and research specializations in cartography, geographic information systems (GIS), and environmental and human geography. Maps--What am I learning from them that I am unaware of?

Today they are scribbled on the back of business cards, delivered with admonitions by our GPS, or arrive on our desktop from Mappy or Google. Most of us, if we reflect on maps at all, are likely to think of them as aids for getting from one place to another without getting lost, happy not to risk roadway suicide refolding their bed sheet-sized ancestors to fit the glove compartment! In the newspaper or on the Internet maps may also seem to be easy ways to digest data, viz., the red/blue state maps used to explain the 2008 US elections or tracking the spread of influenza. However, Denis Wood's sequel to The Power of Maps, takes us far, far deeper into the substratum of how we come to have and use these tools. It examines the assumptions we make about them and their import for both local and global communities.

Wood subjects what we call "a map" to a strict historical scrutiny. At least in the West, maps are with few exceptions a product of the age of nation building. To quote the author, "The things we recognize as maps gained currency only in the last 400 years or so and within this period only in relatively stable states with entrenched, centralized bureaucracies and well-established academies." In truth, far from being passive reflections of geography, maps help construct the state as we know it.

How does this work? Drawing boundaries and naming places are ways of affirming the existence of a state and its reach. The resulting maps, then, both affirm and are affirmed by the authority of the state. The existence of the map offered a sense of identity to both the population within and a claim of proprietorship against those without. Maps are used to tell us that "things are," and that they are "there." At their absolute worst, as history shows, they often give legitimacy, if not a sense of absolute righteousness, to engaging in seizure and genocide.

Maps are not passive pieces of paper or pixels on your computer screen that they at first seem to be. While they present themselves as simply representing facts of nature and society, maps, whether gerrymandering local voting or school districts or staking a claim to territory, are in fact propositions supporting both local and geopolitical agendas in search of acceptance.

Besides chronicling this power and agency of maps with numerous historical and contemporary accounts, Rethinking the Power of Maps contains a brilliantly written, major case study, the mapping and counter-mapping and counter-counter-mapping of Palestine. The focal point of this history is the claim to existence of the State of Israel and propositions as to its geographical reach. I started reading the book from the beginning, but found the cartographic language a bit daunting, so followed the author's suggestion of jumping to this illustrative chapter, whose story line and impact helped me make much better sense of the rest.

Maps share in the power of culture, in which the making of maps has in fact become a part. They are social constructs shaping our reality. They operate like the most influential levels of culture, those that speak to us from below the waterline of consciousness about what we should believe to be real and meaningful. Maps easily close our minds and eyes to conflicting or competing realities that might challenge implanted values and attitudes. Whether justifying contemporary Israeli expansion or motivating the century long march of the "Manifest Destiny" of the white man in America, maps ease the conscience of both their creators and users. Who can argue with "what is?" Here as well as elsewhere rapacious abstraction has the power to gnaw at our humanity.

Beyond tracking the basic story of the development of mapping and its purposes, Wood explores the impact of the legend and symbols and colors used in designing maps, what they tell us and what they hide, as well as how they advertise. The incisiveness and precision with which he examines elements that we take for granted on maps is at once a sociological and epistemological analysis of the minds of both makers and end users of maps. It explains the results of the employing them and gives us clues to the interpreting the language and codes they embody.

Maps are about relationships, how one landscape or feature of what is being measured and presented relates to or elbows another aside in the style of presentation, relative size and importance. Far from innocent notes and symbols, the legend placed on maps (or its absence), too, inevitably bear intentionality. Though we might generally agree that even the most lavishly illustrated menu is not the meal, when it comes to maps, we are far less likely to disentangle reality from its representation by the cartographer or fathom the intentions of his or her patrons.

Given the political, military, financial and social influences behind the creation and use of maps, it is not surprising that elevated consciousness about their actual sources, origins and nature would result in resistance to propositions they espouse. Inevitably this leads to counter-mapping as an expression of criticism and protest.
Wood looks at the rise and fall of cartography as a scholarly discipline, both in the making and classification of maps. Recognizing this, Wood becomes an unabashed advocate of "talking back to the map" and, in a populist sense, "taking back the map." This perspective and tone resonates through the entire the book, but is most explicit in Chapters 5 to 7 where alternative propositions, everything from activist criticism to Dada map art are explored. Wood argues that we need to get beyond the fictive "public participation" that is often championed with a political agenda of balancing support and interests for projects if we are to enter into real democratization of maps.

Rethinking the Power of Maps, is not an easy read, but an eye opening one. The language can be daunting even for US English speakers, not just in the use of vocabulary but in the broadness of the conceptual frame--I read it with my browser open to Wikipedia. The end notes are a copious resource not only listing and explaining references but providing additional commentary on the part of the author that would have overburdened the text.

In sum, I can do no better than quote from the first pages of the book: "Maps are engines that convert social energy into social work," whose outputs include the framing of social space, social order, and social knowledge.

Interesting read, but went off in many tangents

Maps are my thing and I always appreciate an in-depth book on the subject. However, in the case of this book, I felt that I couldn't get a clear focus on the main points the author wished to make. Maybe it's just me, be I was left feeling confused.

About the Author

Carol Carter was a C student in high school. During her senior year, she got a wake-up call when her brother told her that she had intelligence, but she wouldn’t go far in life unless she believed in herself enough to work hard. She began college knowing she was “behind the eight ball” in terms of her skills. What she lacked in experience, she made up for with elbow grease and persistence. She maximized her strength as an interpersonal and intrapersonal learner. The work paid off and she graduated college with honors and a desire to help other students.

����������� Carol is committed to helping students turn on their brains, get motivated, and discover their abilities. As President of her own company, LifeBound, she teaches study, interpersonal, and career skills to middle school and high school students in order to help them become competitive in today’s global world. She trains and certifies coaches in academic coaching skills, and focuses on at-risk students with her volunteer teaching at the federal prison and her LifeBound work in the Denver housing projects.�“All students are at-risk for something whether it is academic, emotional, social, or economic,” says Carol. “If each of us is allowed to be human and accept our flaws, we can overcome our limitations and be the best for ourselves and others.”�

����������� Carol also speaks on educational topics nationally and internationally, and is pictured here with some students at the Aziza Schoolhouse in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.� Her first book, Majoring in the Rest of Your Life, launched her writing career and opened the door to her work on the Keys to Success series.

Joyce Bishop has taught college students for more than 22 years.� After struggling with a learning disability as a student, she focused on her visual and logical-mathematical learning abilities and went on to earn a PhD in psychology. Right now, she is in her dream job as staff development coordinator at Golden West College while still teaching three classes.� She enjoys training other faculty in effective teaching and learning strategies and also in how to teach online.� For 5 years Joyce was voted “favorite teacher,” she was Teacher of the Year for 1995 and 2000, and in 2008 received the Hayward Award, a state teaching award.

Joyce co-founded a program 19 years ago for poor young women from abusive backgrounds. Since that time, the Pathways to Independence nonprofit foundation has sent 255 young women to college, and 195 have graduated into gainful employment.� For these young women coming from challenging backgrounds such as prison, extreme poverty, abuse, or psychological disorders, Joyce has been their champion. This photo is of Joyce with one of the Pathways graduates, Valerie, who obtained her degree in nursing and is now working at a major university hospital as a pediatric nurse.� “It is so inspiring to see what these young women do with their lives,” says Joyce, “once they know that they can do anything.”

Sarah Lyman Kravits lives the strategies for success she writes about. As an author and mother of three children ages 11, 9, and 5, she faces the challenges of managing time and fulfilling responsibilities (not to mention eating right and getting enough sleep).� In her writing and research, she works to stay creative and keep up with technology and the growth of knowledge.� In her work with colleagues all over the country, she strives for integrity, effective communication,�productive teamwork, and flexibility. Finally, in her current role as a breast cancer patient, she uses goal achievement and stress management strategies every day to get through a host of new and unexpected challenges.�����������

����������� Unlike Carol and Joyce, Sarah thrived in school from an early age based on her strength in verbal-linguistic and logical-mathematical learning.�A few years after graduating from the University of Virginia as a Jefferson Scholar, she�worked as program director for LifeSkills, Inc., a nonprofit organization that aims to further the career and personal development of high school students.� This work led her into co-authoring�her first student success text and the realization she was driven to empower students to reach their goals.� “Lifelong learning is the essential success skill,” says Sarah. “Learning gives you a chance to go beyond just thinking about your dreams so that you can make them happen.”�

All High School & College Students Should Read This Book

While attending community college, I was required to read this text for a class called: "Student Life Skills". While a lot of the information was more of a review for me personally, I feel that the topics covered within this text are definitely appropriate for high school students and especially college freshmen. I'm an "older" student--- going to college in my 30s----and as a result I found myself realizing that a lot of the suggestions in this book were things that I was already doing in my academic career.

This book is easy to read, clear and concise. The wording is simple and uses plain, everyday English. I also recommend utilizing as many online resources that the book has to offer. Even though it is geared towards college level students, high schoolers will certainly benefit.

this is a good book for people returning to college or new students going to college. It is written so that
anyone can understand the the concepts explained in the book.
It is colourful and interesting, has personality assessment, thinking style assessments and survey's in the book
which helps a new student to understand how they process information. I highly recommend this book, it is used in
the freshman seminar class that I teach and students reviews are always favourable

good writing but moved fast

F/F erotic romance

Set in Australia, two women meet in an Instagram photography group and partner up for a task. Lesbian Chloe Bevan is just visiting from Brisbane and only temporarily in Melbourne on other personal business. But when she pairs up with Evie Fallon (her straight roommate's sister)... she is instantly and lustfully enamored. Sharing an artistic connection and a mutual sense of lust, these two move in pretty quick to seal the deal. And a trite misunderstanding or two isn't going to keep these two apart. Fairly predictable. Well, the Instagram stuff was a new element. The sex scenes were on the graphic side but there was definitely a blossoming romance here.

Technically, the writing is actually pretty excellent. I like a writer who is descriptive with leads and movement. Especially one who seems to appreciate boobs! But I would have liked a few more details like hair color/style and age. I love stuff like that. Despite the good writing I wasn't all that engaged with the chemistry. I kept wondering what was off. Maybe it just moved too fast for my tastes, I don't know. Maybe a little more sensuality was needed. By the end I was a little more interested in these two. It's pretty simple and cute on the whole, and certainly worth the price... something was just missing for me. I need a stronger build up and seldom get into stories when the hook up is too soon. hmm. Come to think of it... that's what I didn't like much about her other stories. But Taming the Boss worked for me because it was longer and so you still got time to get to know the leads. Not here. Gotta pass on the Instasex.

She really should put out a novel.

Cute story with a hint of erotica...

This is a cute and somewhat erotic short story.

Chloe is in Melbourne to deposit the ashes of a dear friend of hers. That's not the most erotic background to set a love story to but her roommate back in Brisbane has told her to stop by and see her sister, Evie, while she's in town. Upon meeting, Chloe is immediately attracted and an amusing flirtation ensues that blossoms into a love story.

Like Camryn Eyde's other short stories, there is some humor present along with an elicit sex scene. Eyde does both of these well and is really good at depicting natural interactions.

Good read.

Great book! Let your imagination go wild!

Brilliant! The author is a skilled writer and she knows how to take your imagination to the next level.

If you're looking for something short and some "hot shifter sex" and you're team Jacob (from Twilight) then you won't have to look any further. This is probably in the head of Jacob when he's with Bella, but instead, this book gives it a thrilling tension between Bridget and Varo (the characters in the book).

Chosen by the alpha but the pack agrees.
She is a bartender and on her walk home under a full moon after her shift she hears something.
She has heard the rumor of wolves being close, so she tries to get home quick.

She doesn't make it and he wolves are a bit different than she thought they would be, at least the alpha.
She knows him from the bar and is attracted to him.
And he has chosen her as his mate and takes this to the next hot level under the eyes of his pack.

Pity the story stops there, I would have liked to read more about them together

I really wanted to like this story but kept getting distracted by the poor ...

I really wanted to like this story but kept getting distracted by the poor use of the English language. Also, the author kept switching character descriptors. In one sentence the character would be called "she". In the next she would be "the bartender", "Bridget" or "the redhead".
Here is an example the author's writing style: "She did her usual song and dance of flirting with Varo, which gave her little information about the man but left her stomach in knots, served some drinks and had a generally fine night."
Short thought it was, I could not finish it.

Not for finance professionals

According to the Preface, Mr. Borge writes to pique [the reader's] interest in Risk Management. The reader to whom the author is writing is a reader without experience in finance. Indeed, in his effort to avoid the depth or rigor of a risk management textbook, Mr. Borge eliminates much of what a finance professional might find interesting in a book about risk management. Business professionals with a background in finance may find themselves hungry for more substance than the book has to offer.
On the other hand, Mr. Borge successfully describes risk management in terms that individuals without experience in finance will understand. Throughout the book the author applies risk management principles to situations encountered in daily living. These simplified examples give the book a sort of 'Who Moved My Cheese' feel, reinforcing my experience that the book might appeal to non-financial types, while leaving financial-types wanting.

Worth the risk of the purchase price

This book, without a doubt, offers a very clear explanation of the basic principles of risk management. The book concentrates on financial applications and even has a chapter in which he creates a CEO scenario for the reader where the ideas of risk are put into practice. Borge also shows how the same principles may be applied to personal life from the decison to marry to what type of home insurance tp purchase. Borge comes across as very affable and this helps to make the subject matter 'friendly' also. However, I doubt this book was ever intended for finance professionals - though it might be useful in introductory courses on risk management. I also think those looking for more philosophical approaches to the subject (for instance Peter L. Bernstein or Nassim N Taleb) of risk may be somewhat disappointed. At anay rate this book offers sensible advice that avoids easy solutions. In an ideal world this book would be outselling Who Moved My Cheese?

A great book for those interested in high level risk analysis

This is actually a very good book for people that are new the risk analysis world. I've been in the investment business for over 20 years and I feel the book does a great job of giving the reader a 30,000 ft view of risk. I loved the concept that risk management isn't about eliminating risk, it's about giving the analyzer the best chances of risk vs. opportunities. There are numerous examples of risk management that anyone can benefit from but lets face it, this book's title won't exactly get the average joe interested in reading.

Robert Cummings's important new anthology offers in-depth annotation to a chronologically arranged selection from more than 50 poets writing between 1600 and 1700. The so-called canonical poets are generously represented (all of Milton's Comus, all of Marvell's Upon Appleton House, all of Denham's Coopers Hill) and sometimes with a novel emphasis on what are often taken as unanthologizable (non-lyric) kinds (more of Donne's epistolary and funerary poetry, selections from Drayton's Poly-Olbion, more of Waller).

But the volume is notably catholic, including writers rarely anthologized (Wentworth Dillon) or only recently brought to critical notice (Mary Wroth, Anne Wharton) or discovered (Martha Moulsworth). It runs from anonymous ballads on the one hand to selections on the other out of the great translators (from Chapman and Sylvester to Dryden).

The texts are freshly edited from contemporary sources, with more important variants recorded. The spelling has been modernized. The annotation is much fuller than is customary in anthologies - it makes explicit the literary and other historical contexts of the poems printed in the volume. Bibliographical and other aids make this an invaluable volume for students engaging with the poetry of the period, whether for the first time or at a more advanced level of appreciation and acquaintance.

About the Author
Robert Cummings teaches at the University of Glasgow. He is author of Spenser: The Critical Heritage (1970) and George Herbert: Language of Canaan. He has a special interest in translation and co-edits Translation and Literature.

I have been looking for a teaching anthology for a 17th-century poetry course that would be well annotated and lively. This fits the bill! I also think the general reader might enjoy it. This is certainly the best 17th century poetry anthology on the market!

About the Author
While we might live in a world whose advances in military technology seem ever more to encroach upon the realm of science fiction, my own interest remains firmly directed towards conflict's human dimension. Having been born into the bleakness and hardship of a post-WW11 United Kingdom missing so many thousands of husbands, brothers, uncles and sons, I am particularly curious about the social, physical and intellectual consequences of the involuntary transformation, in wartime, of a family-oriented civilian population into combatants whose actions and very existence become, at a stroke, the property of the state. With regard to Operation CHARIOT, the Raid on Saint-Nazaire, I have, by delving deep within the nuts and bolts of one specific military event, sought to illustrate the unconscionable waste of energy, gift and youth, that is the inevitable consequence of our inability to live with one another in peace. Thanks to CHARIOT alone, Britain lost some of her very brightest and very best young men - a loss from which can be extrapolated the overwhelming folly of war in general as a solution to conflict. Surely our societies are not so overburdened with talent that we can afford to squander our most precious resource in enterprises whose only certain products are death and destruction. On a more personal note, I am an Irish Canadian, currently resident in the UK. Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1946, I graduated from Trinity College, Dublin, before marrying my wife, and best friend, Sandie, in 1968. Having always been interested in aviation, we moved to England where I worked for several years in the aircraft industry, initially at the old Vickers works at Brooklands and ultimately on the Concorde supersonic transport project at RAF Fairford - a WW11 American air base. In 1974 we moved to Canada - to Alberta in the first instance, then to Victoria, British Columbia (surely one of the most beautiful yet least known cities in the world). While working in Victoria as an illustrator, I started to write a novel the research for which led me to CHARIOT and a decade and a half of research during which I was privileged to meet, and interview at length, most of the then surviving 'Charioteers'. Born in Northern Ireland in 1946, James Dorrian, BA, started his career with the Concorde Flight Test Centre. He emigrated to Canada in 1974 and established himself in Victoria, British Columbia, as a successful graphic designer. He returned to England in 1990 in order to pursue his work as a military historian. He also works as an artist painting vintage cars. He lives near Crewe.

Well-written, detailed, and, where necessary, critical.

Author Dorrian tells the story of the raid to destroy the docks at St. Nazaire so as to deny a berth to the German battleship TIRPITZ. He describes the strategic situation, outlines the plan, and gives some background on the primary individuals involved before getting into a highly-detailed account of the raid itself. He gives full credit to the crews of the British motor torpedo boats who found themselves in a harrowing situation without having volunteered for it, unlike the commandoes they were supporting. Dorrian does not hesitate to criticize the lack of support given to the raiding force by the Admiralty and the RAF. He also shows how the local French suffered as a result of the German response to the raid, side effects that are often overlooked in glowing accounts of World War Two special operations. Ultimately, the book shows how a well-trained, highly-motivated military unit can achieve remarkable success despite great difficulties. Highly recommended to anyone interested in special operations or coastal defense.

Detailed and gripping.

A well-researched and -written book on the British commando attack on the docks in St. Nazaire, France, in March of 1942. Dorrian points out the risky nature of the raid, the limited support given to the raiding force by the Admiralty and the Royal Air Force, and the incredible courage and persistance of the commandos and sailors assigned to the mission. Dorrian also brings the French residents into the story, and shows how the German occupiers took out their revenge on them. Unlike many current military history titles, the maps are useful! The two biggest drawbacks : as this title was originally published in Great Britain, the author does not explain his use of certain British military terms (e.g. "O group", "pongo") and practically no research was done from the German side. Nonetheless, highly recommended to those interested in the Second World War, special operations, or naval history.

An account of one of the most audacious raids from WW2.

After the Bismarck was sunk in May 1941, the Tirpitz posed the greatest threat to Allied shipping in the Atlantic by any surface vessel. In order to pose such a menace, however, like the Bismarck, first she had to get there. Both sides were aware of how the Bismarck’s attempt had been a close run thing. Had her steering gear not been jammed by a fortunate torpedo strike - just as the great ship was executing an emergency turn, she would easily have made it to safety.

Whilst stopping the Tirpitz was, therefore a high priority for the British, the ship was also proving to be most elusive. Then came a plan with a very different approach altogether. The Tirpitz was a massive 45,000 tonnes and, in those days, there were not very many docks able to take such a large vessel. If ever she did break out, she would need to have a safe refuge somewhere for those eventual repairs and engine overhauls that are an essential part of running any big ship. The only suitable dockyard outside Germany was at Saint Nazaire.

In a daring raid in which no fewer than 5 VC’s were won, this is the story of how one of HM Ships was disguised to look like a German Destroyer in order to get close to the gates at the entrance to Saint Nazaire harbour - the very gates through which any big ship would have to pass. The plan was simple enough; A large compartment in the bows of the ship were packed with high explosives and then sealed shut. With the ship thus transformed into a time-bomb, she was driven at full speed into those gates where she became firmly wedged. This was followed by fierce fighting as the British tried to withdraw their now stranded crew and Commando troops from the harbour.

Later, when quite had finally descended on the town, the Germans inspected the ship - completely bemused by what appeared to be a futile attempt to wreck their harbour by simply ramming the gates. But, somewhere in a sealed compartment a clock was still ticking…..
