A Master Storyteller!

When Kristina answered an ad for a mail order bride for a man in Colorado Springs, she left a life of forced prostitution in Chicago behind. But when Jeremiah recognises her former vocation by her only dress when she arrives, he hands her off to his brother, Luke, who planned to never marry. Luke fights the decision, but soon finds he enjoys being around the little spitfire. Then deadly secrets surface in a way that will forever change them both.

This is one of the few books I have read recently that captured my attention on the first page and didn't let go. Joyce began with laugh out loud humor and moved on through loss, pain, grief, and ultimately joy. Few author's I have read have been able to match her skill in storytelling. I have already purchased book two and am watching for the release of book three. This book is that good.

I love this story

I love this story. The characters are interesting and complicated. The story is touching and emotional. There are some nice twists to keep your interest.
This is not your typical shifter story so you get a unique world and mythology.
While I know this is a series you get a full story and I can't wait for the next.

Interesting story about a Cowboy wolf and his "mail ordered" bride. I loved Luke and Kristina's story. She is just sassy and strong enough to take on two brothers and hold her own in the Wild West. Worth your time for this cute romance. Happy reading.

There IS Power in Persistent Prayer And This Book Tells You How To Do It Effectively

Bestselling author and recognized "international prophetic prayer warrior" Cindy Jacobs has written a most helpful, informative and edifying book concerning the spiritual discipline of prayer. Prayer is something most professing Christians talk about a lot but do very little of. Maybe that is due in part to our ignorance as to what prayer really is and what purposeful and passionate prayer can really accomplish.

In the first chapter of her book, "Why Pray," author Jacobs cites Scripture passages, a very poignant personal example of an experience in her own life with her son Daniel concerning prayer and the writings of respected authors and church leaders such as Paul Billheimer and Dutch Sheets to answer the "Why" question about prayer for us. After you read Chapter 1 you will not only want to pray more and pray more effectively, purposefully and passionately, you will have a better understanding of why pray and just how important it is in our lives as Disciples of Christ.

In Chapter 2 author Jacobs presents her case for the reason for and the necessity of persistent praying sharing stories as examples from the lives of real people, from the Scriptures and the writings of John Wesley. She makes it abundantly clear in this chapter that persistent prayer is not only vital to our spiritual lives but it is also Biblical as taught by Jesus in his Parable concerning the persistent widow in Luke 8:1-8.

Many of us as professing believers are confused about the issue of prayer and praying for and praying the will of God in our lives. It is a mystery to us and it is because of that fact that most of us do not pray "the will of God." The good news is in chapter 3 of her book, author Jacobs writes confidently about the important matter of "Praying the Will of God." Praying the will of God requires that we know what his will is and as author Jacobs informs us The Word of God reveals the will of God for us so praying from the Word is essential to be able to "Pray the Will of God." She shares the amazing true story of George Muller who fed thousands of orphans as a result of his persistent, purposeful and passionate praying in the will of God. She also shares appropriate and helpful Biblical passages that enables us to better understand "Praying the Will of God" so that by understanding what it means to pray the will of God we will then know how to do it.

Chapter 4 is a most important chapter and requires a slow, considerate and prayerful reading as it is in this chapter that author Jacobs shares "Blockages to Answered Prayer;" the things in our lives that keep our prayers from being answered as we would like them to be. She writes concerning what she believes are 5 "Blockages to Answered Prayer." They are "A Deep Emotional Wound," Unforgiveness," Bitter Roots," "Unconfessed Sin," and "Strongholds of the Mind." What makes her book so powerful is that she consistently refers to the Scriptures to support what she writes. The real examples of other people that she writes about in her book are helpful in supporting her claims; however, it is her rightly using and dividing God's Word that makes her book most compelling and powerful.

In Chapter 5 author Jacobs writes about the issue of fasting and its correlation to prayer. Fasting is not something that most of us as Westernized believers know much about let alone practice, but as you will learn from her book, it is a most essential spiritual discipline that should be combined with our persistent praying as believers. And God truly responds in a mighty and marvelous way when his people fast and pray the right way and for the right reasons - which you learn in her book.

Chapter 6 is about "Praying the Word," and how to do it effectively. There is nothing more powerful in the world than a person on their knees before God in prayer and praying the Word of God. God delights in our doing that and he responds to our doing it. It is something we all need to do more of to be sure.

In Chapters 7 author Jacobs writes how very important and essential it is for us as believers to blend our persistent prayers with "Persistent Praise." God loves to hear and respond to both the prayers and the praise of his people.

In Chapters 8-10 the author writes about 3 types of prayers explaining their significance as well as how to pray them most effectively. The 3 types of prayer she writes about are "Intergenerational Prayer," "Proclamation Prayer," and "Kingdom Intercession." And all 3 are types of prayers we should all be praying as Disciples of Christ. In the chapter concerning Kingdom Intercession she offers some extremely helpful and practical tips as to how we can become more effective as Intercessors in prayer for God. At the end of her book author Jacobs provides us with a discussion guide that has questions for either individual or a group study of the book.

As one wise preacher once said to me in regards to prayer - "he needed the prayer, and I needed the practice." Author Jacobs book is a God-sent book that has reminded me and us as Disciples of Christ again of the importance of persistent, purposeful and passionate prayer as well as the God-glorifying results that occur when we pray in that fashion.

Persistent Prayer

"Just what the doctor ordered" is the best way I can describe how I felt as I read Cindy Jacobs' latest book. I am always fascinated that no matter how many books you read on prayer, none has yet exhausted this most amazing privilege God has given to the body of Christ. Cindy Jacobs not only walks you through topics such as: "Why pray? Blockages to Answered Prayer, and Praying the Will of God," but she also gives a breakdown of the different types of prayer and biblical references to assist your own personal study and devotion. I had moments of tears, confession and of just setting the book aside and flowing in prayer on the different subjects, as I read through the book. This book does not only teach about persistent prayer but it ushers you into praying as your eyes are opened to areas that you may have over-looked in the past. You will find some "ah ha" moments, and I love the way she addresses the issue of fasting and how important it is to one's prayer life. Thereby, where it states, "It seems to me that there is often a direct correlation between the power over temptations such as sexual sin and a fasting life. When one controls the physical appetite, the authority gained through that spiritual discipline extends to power over other kinds of temptation as well."

Whether you are a novice or seasoned in prayer, you will find that Ms Jacobs' book will infuse your passion and fire for a life of prayer. Some may even ask, "Why another book on prayer?" I will have to say, having read quite a number of books on the subject, this book proved that there is so much more for us to learn about prayer. I have concluded that this is such an inexhaustible subject and who better to learn from but one of God's vessels of honor on the subject. If you love the Lord and desire to grow in your knowledge of Him then you would be remised if you did not pick up this awesome book and be driven to "praying with greater purpose and passion."

About the Author
John T. Cacioppo is the Tiffany and Margaret Blake Distinguished Service Professor and Director of the Center for Cognitive and Social Neuroscience at the University of Chicago. He is a past President of several scientific societies, including the Association for Psychological Science, the Society for Social Neuroscience, the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, and the Society for Psychophysiological Research, and a past Chair of the Psychology Section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Among the awards he has received are the Troland Award from the National Academy of Sciences, the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award from the American Psychological Association, a MERIT Award from the National Institutes of Health, the Scientific Impact Award from the Society of Experimental Social Psychology, the Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions from the Society for Psychophysiological Research, and the Campbell Award and the Theoretical Innovation Prize from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. Cacioppo is a Member of the President's Committee on the National Medal of Science; the Chair of the Board of Behavioral, Cognitive, and Sensory Sciences at the National Research Council and a Member of the National Science Foundation Advisory Committee for the Social, Behavioral, and Economic Sciences Directorate; and a former Member of both the Council for the NIH Center for Scientific Review and the Council for the National Institute on Aging.

Laura A. Freberg (Ph.D., UCLA) is Professor of Psychology at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where she teaches courses in Introductory Psychology, Biological Psychology, and Sensation and Perception. Laura's teaching career began when she taught her first college course at Pasadena City College at the age of 23. To better understand the needs of the online education community, she also teaches a variety of psychology courses for Argosy University Online. Laura has received Faculty Member of the Year recognition from Cal Poly Disabilities Resource Center three times (1991, 1994, and 2009) for her work with students with disabilities. She enjoys using technology and social media in the classroom, and is a Google Glass Explorer. Laura serves as the Content Expert Writer for Psychology for Answers.com and as the Bylaws and Archives Committee Chair for the Society for Social Neuroscience. She is a member of the editorial board for Leadership Quarterly. With John Cacioppo of the University of Chicago, she is the co-author of two editions of DISCOVERING PSYCHOLOGY: THE SCIENCE OF MIND (Cengage Learning).

Full disclosure - I know the author. And he's an outstanding woodworker.

To the book. Strother brings a deep understanding of tools, materials, and methods to this book. He walks the reader through the building of a variety of boxes using readily available hand tools and a minimum of expensive stationary power tools. That's good stuff, but if that were all the book did, I'd be yawning instead of writing this review.

For example, while other books might have you saw and joint the stock for box sides, then get right to work cutting dovetails, Strother suggests you set the newly milled pieces aside over night to allow whatever internal stresses whose balance the milling changed to work their warps. Then in the morning, check the stock and re-mill as needed. As an experienced woodworker myself, I can't express how much I wish I had known that early on. That's the sort of knowledge that minimizes the frustration of learning a skill.

Each project not only creates a beautiful box, it develops a more skilled woodworker. I have too much respect for the craft to suggest anyone could go from beginner to master with one book. That takes a lifetime. But this little box book is an excellent starting point - in fact, one of the best I've seen.

Extremely thorough "how to" on making these boxes.

This is an excellent book for a beginner or low intermediate woodworker starting to make boxes, who is also looking to gain understanding of general woodworking techniques. The text and photos in this book are wonderfully clear telling and showing just how each step is performed. This is done much more exhaustively and at a slower pace than most other box making books, which tend to focus rather exclusively on whatever technique makes each individual project unique or intricate. In "Traditional Box Projects" Mr Purdy makes it is easy for someone to duplicate the project steps without having to fill in any steps that have been left out or glossed over. I can't commend this book highly enough for its clarity of instruction. For someone not already quite familiar with the processes of working with woodworking machines and hand tools, this is a good volume to use as both a primer for those techniques and the application of them toward making boxes specifically.

Although there are only eight projects in the book, with the exception of the first one which is a bandsaw box, they are quite similar in their rectilinear designs without a lot of variation in general format. So the book lacks somewhat in design diversity. However, we need to keep in mind that its purpose is not as a design primer but as a hands-on manual of instruction to guide someone carefully through the project steps with a well-constructed box as the result. In meeting this goal, it is one of the best books I've seen, easily earning a place among the pantheon of top-notch boxmaking books from Doug Stowe, David Freedman, Jeff Greef, James Stack, or "Making Great Boxes" from the staff of Wood Magazine. If you seek design diversity, allow me to recommend "400 Wood Boxes: The Fine Art of Containment & Concealment", the books of Tony Lydgate or Andrew Crawford, or "New Masters of the Wooden Box: Expanding the Boundaries of Box Making" which is somewhat redundant with the 400 Boxes book.

Very good book

I've enjoyed this book very much. I know some of the instructions may not be exactly what some people want - down to the one ten thousandths of an inch, but most things I make are on the principle of trial and error. The book gives me direction I need and for my money, it was well worth it.
