From Publishers Weekly
Stark, a workshop leader and seminar speaker who is director of Changing Church ministries in Minnesota, offers readers an exhaustive treatise on developing a Christ-based leadership model by making comparisons to current business methods. Stark lends his personal and professional expertise to this biblically based text that delineates how to create teams of men and women that intentionally focus upon the "whole work" rather than on individual players. According to Stark, the Bible recognizes that believers, though individually specialized, can function successfully as one unit without division. He believes that the Christian church has arrived at a crossroads whereby leadership must become more "market driven and niche sensitive." Just as successful businesses have learned to adapt to "people-niches" and "people-needs," so churches should follow suit, though Stark cautions that secular models aren't always fully adequate for the church's needs and mission. He coaches church leaders to define success, ambition, focus and to learn to play to people's strengths instead of wasting effort on overcoming weaknesses. While this resource is comprehensive, its dry presentation sadly guarantees that only the most determined reader will make it to the book's end. (Dec.)

A blend of biblical and business wisdom
By Christian Book Previews
Comprehensive and well researched, this book realistically investigates the structure of church leadership. By comparing biblical teaching with the methods used by successful businesses, readers will be shown startling similarities which can transform current ministries.

While the author's blueprint for ministry comes from the words and actions of Jesus, many churches miss the significance of this scriptural model. The Lord equipped His disciples to function as a single unit, made up of individuals in the body of Christ. By utilizing the gifts of each member, the overall effect promotes unity, while shifting the focus from personal achievement to the benefit of the group. The author has observed that in a church setting where the pastor's role is dominant, the roles of others go dormant. At this point, the ministry ceases to be practical and effective.

Yet, that doesn't need to happen. Through a systematic analysis of successful business policies and practices, readers will see an amazing correlation to the principles Jesus set forth. While some of the secular models can't be adapted for church use, the concepts explained in this book give food for thought. It's clear the author is sincerely trying to encourage Christian leaders to explore the current trend toward a more sensitive approach to ministry.

With quotes and research from leading authorities in this field, as well as penetrating questions for the reader, this book is a comprehensive view of the issue. Scripture supports each principle, while a specific business theory is explored on a parallel plane. The details merge with precision and give weight to the ideas presented.

Christ-Based Leadership uniquely blends biblical wisdom with contemporary success for a timeless look at real leaders. - Joyce Handzo, Christian Book Previews.com

A Book that Asks Good Questions
By Trevin Wax
David Stark's book Christ-Based Leadership: Applying the Bible and Today's Best Leadership Models to Become an Effective Leader (2005, Bethany House, Minneapolis) contains important questions that church leaders would do well to ask themselves. Each chapter is a question: "What is the truth of your ambition?" "Who is Lord of your leadership?" "What is your definition of success?" "Do you play to strengths so people can do their best?"

Stark combines biblical insights with current teaching on leadership and encourages us to be Christ-centered leaders. If you wish you had more time to read all the current books on leadership philosophy, then you will enjoy this book. Stark does a good job of drawing from a wide variety of leadership sources, and he has even included many graphs and charts from other books. The book's brevity (under 200 pages) keeps the reader moving and hits the highlights of current leadership philosophy.

Stark uses Scripture in every chapter; sometimes he quotes entire narratives. Unfortunately, the discerning reader will see that much of the Scriptural content is plugged in to bolster the argument from current leadership strategies. It's not that the material is unbiblical; it's that the leadership focus is not biblically derived. Stark's greatest insights come from the other books on leadership, and then he finds Scripture that back them up. Contrast this book to Henry Blackaby's Spiritual Leadership.

I do not want to give the impression that there is nothing of substance in this book. Surely there is! This book is well worth the price I paid for it, and I will probably read it again. Stark does not uncritically accept all leadership teaching either. My only disappointment was the sometimes-superficial way in which Scripture was unintentionally treated.

Conference Management & Event Planning by Nainil and Monil Chheda seems to be a good book for those that want to start an Event
By Enous Johnson
This is my fourth book on Event Planning. There are some books that have too much detail while others are just superficial. Conference Management & Event Planning by Nainil and Monil Chheda seems to be a good book for those that want to start an Event Planning Career in their organization and have little to no knowledge in the field. The book also talks about hiring Event Planning Services which helps companies in sourcing services from the experts. Event Management can be a very broad topic with a lot of variations. I would recommend this book to the beginners.

Very impressive
By Manchester
I am very impressed with this book; it's sophisticated and detailed but also written in a manner that is easy to understand for the not-so-competent such as myself. I am not saying this to undermine it's credibility at all, there's a wide variety of information that many people could learn from, regardless of their experience planning and what kind of events they plan.

It's not the longest book in the world but the author makes good use of every single page with a 'no-filler, no-fluff' style of writing. I can definitely say that I learned more from this one book than the previous 2 that I read on the same topic. If you're looking to save time and find a no-nonsense kind of book then I think this book may be right for you

From Goodreads

The Kafir Projectis an impressive first novel by Lee Burvine, who blends together credible scientific concepts with religious history to craft a fast-paced and truly page-turning adventure. It's hard to avoid comparisons with Dan Brown. The themes and structure of Burvine's work are related, but you come away fromKafirwith more useful and accurate information. The primary plot plays out a fantasy I've long had: what if it were somehow possible to go back and view the foundations of the major religions--to know for certain what happened, and what didn't? How might those truths change the world?

This thought experiment is just onethread in a tapestry weaving together quantum computing, relativity, observational time travel, DNA data storage, archaeology, and international politics. Of note, Burvine forges two villains who are truly frightening in their drive, competence, and unpredictability. Once you pick this book up, you won't want to put it down.--Ross Blocher

"A thrilling roller coaster ride. Fast paced and riveting. I couldn't put it down."
Lawrence Krauss--award winning astrophysicist, and author of A Universe From Nothing

"Grips you from the first page ... seamlessly intertwines sci-fi, applied physics, and a healthy dose of archaeology."
Natalia Reagan--anthropologist, writer, TV animal expert (National Geographic Channel)

"Endless fun."
Alexander Rosenberg--philosopher, novelist, and author of The Girl from Krakow

"Burvine gives the world a new kind of hero, an intelligent science communicator in the mold of a Richard Dawkins or Neil deGrasse Tyson."
Andrew L. Seidel--Constitutional and civil rights attorney for the Freedom From Religion Foundation

"A compelling read."
Peter Boghossian--philosopher and author of Street Epistemology

"Blends the breakneck pace of the best page-turning mysteries with genuine religious history."
Emery Emery--film editor (Aristocrats), and host of the award winning podcast Ardent Atheist

"Strong male and female characters. Everything a nerdy faithless feminist could want."
Karen L. Garst--author of Women Beyond Belief: Discovering Life without Religion

"Historians and scientists have long known the Abrahamic religions are fiction. Who would have thought those findings could be turned into such an entertaining science fiction thriller?"
Dan Barker--author of GOD: The Most Unpleasant Character in All Fiction

About the Author
LEE BURVINE is the author's anonymous pen name. Sadly, we live in a world where publicly speaking certain truths can be very bad for your health. Lee's lifelong thirst to get to the bottom of things and to tell cracking stories about what he found has culminated in The Kafir Project, his first novel.

Even better than I expected
By Amazon Customer
Lee Burvine is a new author to me and I saw good reviews so I read it. This is a wonderful roller coaster ride, like James Bond but no super hero stuff! The writing is clear and unfogged. The heroes are real people with real lives and full personalities. I would love to meet them!
The plot is twisted enough to be fun but not so much as to lose the reader. The conspiracy is not (in my opinion ) forced as there really are people who are this messed up by their beliefs.
I would highly recommend it to the discerning lover of modern thrillers.

Cloak-and-dagger, sci-fi/tech and religious controversy all rolled into break-necked pace thriller
By Stephan C Schlotter
Were one to bring Dan Brown, Robert Ludlum and Frederik Pohl together to collaborate
on a novel, the result might well be something like The Kafir Project. With the
action centered around a television personality, two scientists at Lawrence
Livermore National Laboratory and a Federal agent, Lee Burvine's plot develops with
the almost dizzying speed of an hour-long television thriller (think "24" for
example). It's not quite like any novel I've ever read - at least none that I can
recollect. When was the last time you read anything in the "thriller" genre that
included a bibliography that cites 17 scholarly books and articles ranging from
Biblical scholarship to psychology to computer science?

Given the hypersensitivity so prevelant in American society today, I suppose a
"trigger warning" is in order. Lee Burvine's novel touches on contemporary
controversies concerning history, culture and the prevailing mythologies of the
Western world. It will inevitably push buttons for some readers. That's just what a
book exploring this terrain ought to do.

Whether you're looking for a fast-paced thriller with credible characters caught up
in cloak-and-dagger intrigues, or fun sci-fi/tech story, you should find The Kafir

Project a satisfying read. As a bonus, Dr. Lawrence Krauss contributes a charming
forward to the novel that I enjoyed reading almost as much as the novel itself.

Highly recommended.

What fun!
By Kendra H.
This was a blast to read! The story dropped one right into mayhem and madness from page one and went from there with no downtime. I enjoyed the characters, and felt they were fleshed out nicely. The bits of snarkiness and humor weren't overdone, but felt real enough in the crazy situation that it worked well. It was extremely thought-provoking, along the "what if this could really happen".

A Dance with Dragons: A Song of Ice and Fire: Book 5, by George R. R. Martin

Dubbed the American Tolkien by Time magazine, George R. R. Martin has earned international acclaim for his monumental cycle of epic fantasy. Now the number-one New York Times best-selling author delivers the fifth book in his spellbinding landmark series - as both familiar faces and surprising new forces vie for a foothold in a fragmented empire.

In the aftermath of a colossal battle, the future of the Seven Kingdoms hangs in the balance once again - beset by newly emerging threats from every direction. In the east, Daenerys Targaryen, the last scion of House Targaryen, rules with her three dragons as queen of a city built on dust and death. But Daenerys has three times 3,000 enemies, and many have set out to find her. Yet, as they gather, one young man embarks upon his own quest for the queen, with an entirely different goal in mind.

To the north lies the mammoth Wall of ice and stone - a structure only as strong as those guarding it. There, Jon Snow, 998th Lord Commander of the Nights Watch, will face his greatest challenge yet. For he has powerful foes not only within the Watch but also beyond, in the land of the creatures of ice.

And from all corners, bitter conflicts soon reignite, intimate betrayals are perpetrated, and a grand cast of outlaws and priests, soldiers and skinchangers, nobles and slaves, will face seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Some will fail, others will grow in the strength of darkness. But in a time of rising restlessness, the tides of destiny and politics will lead inevitably to the greatest dance of all.

An irresistible mix that reads true to life.......
By MizEm, Queens, NY
I admit to reading all 5,000 odd pages, and cannot wait for the next book. Here is why: you get to really care about these characters, and the time and events, even the magic and fantastical, seem real. It is an amazing achievement. I am the wrong demographic to love these books. That said, I think we read this kind of fiction for escape and insight. The parallels to actual history, wars of secession, religious wars, familial wars, the long memories of nations and people that erupt in violence, are all here. Moral dilemmas are also here and well represented. Throw in plot twists, surprises, a few dragons, blood magic and zombies, love and lust, justice and violence, vengeance, ambition and politics, and you have an irresistible mix that reads true to life. And of course, it all leaves you hanging as the story is not fully told. I have at least twenty questions that need answers. I have also watched the video series, and think they have done a remarkable job editing and focusing the story to make it more manageable. Hats off to all involved, and to George RR Martin: will you ever be able to put this baby to sleep?

So Many Words, So Little Plot
By kjsem78
How, HOW is this book averaging 4 1/2 stars?? When did abject overwriting and lack of plot advancement warrant such a rating? Here were my thoughts going into this book (Spoilers):

1. Surely Daenerys would finally at least BEGIN her journey to Westeros to claim the Iron Throne with her super Unsullied army. - Nope (But ANOTHER Targaryen, whom the reader has spent a whole 30 seconds with, is poised to fight for the throne).
2. Surely we'd see a good, dramatic trial for Cersei. - Not a chance.
3. Surely Tyrion would do something, ANYTHING to get the story moving. - Negative.
4. Surely the White Walkers would finally factor into the story. - No.
5. Surely Stannis would wreak havoc in the North and at least somewhat avenge the annihilation of the Starks and be a real threat for claiming the throne. - Sorry.
6. Surely Dorne would begin to play a larger role in the Game of Thrones. - Don't be silly.
7. Surely Bran will begin to play a part in all of this. - Not quite. He's a tree now. Or a crow. I'm not really certain.

How can Martin write SO many pages yet have so little happen? I mean, if you want to know what a character is eating to break their fast, or what color someone's surcoat or tokar is, or what color the bricks of a city are that day, or that words are wind, then this book will be riveting to you. And are we supposed to care more about Westeros or Essos? Becasue ADWD sure is Essos-centric. In fact, 99% of Martin's world seems to be made up of it, with the people living there viewing Westeros as some insignificant backwater. Reading AGoT, I thought that part of the world would just be a jumping-off point for Daenerys. But no, it now has become the virtual main setting of ASOIAF. Why did Martin make that decision? I want to find out what happens in Westeros. Or do I? I'm not sure what the reader is supposed to be focused on because Martin is just all over the place. Toward the end of the book, Dany hallucinates and talks to Jorah Mormont who reiterates that he told her to go to Westeros because Meereen was not where she belonged. I felt as if Martin was mocking us because it's what every frickin' reader would have told her as well. So why did you make us read hundreds of pages about her fretting away in Meereen?! And, at the end, she seemingly ends ups in the same place she was in AGoT!

There are also numerous characters whom I think Martin wants us to be invested in, but we just aren't because they're either not too interesting or they get lost in this morass of a book. I'm sure some readers do, but do most of us care at all about characters like Asha, Victarion, and Euron? Even Theon/Reek got old by the second half of the book. And honestly, are we supposed to care about what happens to the the billions of people in Meereen like the Brazen Beasts, Stormcrows, Sons of the Harpy, Hizdahr, etc.? Everyone in Meereen, save a couple, are pretty much terrible people and I couldn't care less what their ultimate fate is.

And let's talk about Quentyn Martell. He and his journey to court Dany get no little page time, but the only purpose he serves is to free the dragons. That's it. Now that's fine, but there was no reason for Martin to spend the chapters he did on him if he was a simple plot device.

Lastly, everything in this series is miserable and depressing; and this is coming from someone who LIKES dark books and movies. But, my goodness, nothing uplifting at all happens. It's just one gloomy event after another and everyone is either angry, oppressed, or psychotic. Martin goes out of his way to ensure that absolutely nothing remotely pleasant happens. I understand there are books with such tones, but after nearly 5,000 pages of it, you get a bit worn down. I know a big appeal of the series are the "gray" characterizations, and I agree, but does nearly everyone have to be a murderous sociopath with no regard for human life? This worked in the first three books because we weren't sure what characters we were going to root for or against. But now, we know who has a shred of decency or not and the incessant melancholy is tiresome.

This was the first book which I had to put down and read another book in between with before mustering up the motivation to finish. Usually, I'd just abandon a book I wasn't enjoying, but after reading 4,000 pages of the series I couldn't quit on it. Books 1-3 were fantastic. A Feast For Crows began the downslide but I figured it was merely setup. But ADWD was even worse than setup because NOTHING HAPPENS. I'm really torn over whether I'll read The Winds of Winter if and when it's released. I don't think I have it in me to read another novel like ADWD. I only started this series a few months ago, so I read all these books back-to-back (excluding the one I read three-quarters of the way through ADWD to keep my sanity), so I saw the decline of storytelling with this series happen in real time.

GRRM's Most Merciless Tale Yet
By Joseph Finley
Let me start by saying this is a first rate novel. At times, I found myself lost within its pages, feeling the story’s suspense and tension in my very bones. It is better than “A Feast for Crows” and probably on par with “A Clash Of Kings.” But it is easily George R.R. Martin’s most merciless tale in the series. Imagine “A Storm Of Swords” ending right after the Red Wedding. Just merciless.

“A Dance With Dragons” is the fraternal twin of “A Feast For Crows.” Originally, Martin intended them to be a single book, but after it grew two long, he broke it in two. He separated the storylines geographically, so the two books were supposed to take place at the same time. But that is only true for about half of “A Dance With Dragons.” Past the midpoint, the novels’ timelines converge and several of the stories started in “A Feast For Crows” continue in “A Dance With Dragons.” As a result, we have several chapters from the viewpoint of characters like Cersei and Victarion Greyjoy, who were major players in “A Feast For Crows.” There’s also scenes from Jaimie’s and Arya’s points-of-view, but none from Sansa’s or Sam’s.

The main characters in “A Dance With Dragons” are all the fan favorites who were left out of “A Feast For Crows”: Daenerys, Jon Snow, Bran Stark, and Tyrion Lannister. The book also features a myriad of scenes from other characters’ viewpoints, including Theon Greyjoy, his sister Asha, Lady Melisandre, Barristan Selmy, Davos Seaworth, two princes of Dorne, an exiled knight who served as Hand to the last Targaryan king, and Kevan Lannister. It’s a thick character soup, but somehow it all works.

This novel includes more scenes set across the Narrow Sea and around Slavers’ Bay than any of the prior novels. Many storylines are leading toward Daenerys and her dragons, and it’s in these scenes that the book is at its best. In fact if this novel only concerned Daenerys’ storyline, it would be a worthy read. Dany shows her naiveté in this one, revealing she’s still a young girl and not quite ready to play the game of thrones. As the title suggests, her dragons play a significant role, and the scenes involving them are among my favorites. Ser Barristan Selmy also takes on a leading role. He’s one of the few true heroes left in the story, wise and brave and noble like Ned Stark. We’ve needed a replacement for Ned for a while now, and Selmy is it. Of course, this means he’ll probably meet a tragic death in “The Winds Of Winter.” C’est la via.

The bulk of the remaining action takes place in the North, where Ramsey Bolton has become the book’s biggest monster since Prince Joffrey. (Actually, Bolton is worse. Much worse.) He and his father have their eyes on Winterfell, which Ramsey hopes to secure through a marriage with a girl he believes to be Arya Stark. Meanwhile, up at The Wall, Jon Snow is dealing with Mance Raider and all the Wildlings who surrendered at the end of A Storm of Swords. He also has to deal with the presence of Stannis Baratheon and his red priestess Melisandre, whose prophecies are starting to play a major role in these books. Beyond The Wall, Bran continues to search for the three-eyed crow, and while his story arc makes long strides, it’s unclear where Martin is going with this character.

By the end, the lives of nearly every character the reader cares about are far worse off than when the book begins. Pick your wedding, Red or Purple, and you’ll get the picture. Also, there are no storylines resolved in this book. Nearly every main character’s tale ends in some form of cliffhanger. So now, we must wait until “The Winds Of Winter” to learn what might emerge from the chaos that is the end of “A Dance With Dragons.”

Air, by Vincent Laforet

As seen on CBS News Sunday Morning and CBS News This Morning: "No city has designed its lighting to look good from orbit. Yet our city lights viewed from above are truly spectacular - a beautiful, unintended consequence of civilization. They radiate into space a message about who we are." (foreword) - Donald R. Pettit / NASA Astronaut. Sublime, quiet, serene, surreal, and other-worldly... these are just a few of the adjectives that only begin to describe Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Vincent Laforet's mesmerizing high-altitude nighttime aerial photos over some of the most iconic cities around the world including New York, London, Sydney, Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Berlin, and Barcelona. "AIR is a project born of my need to share an important lesson I've discovered over the past decade making aerial photographs: the world is much smaller than we think." says Laforet. "Borders are irrelevant and distances shortened. Clearly, we are more intimately connected to one another than we may realize. I chose the title AIR because it's something we all share and are all equally responsible for. By definition air doesn't belong to anyone. It belongs to us all regardless of background, social status and origin, as does this project. Laforet, a three-time winner at the prestigious 2010 Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival, is a director and Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer who's known for his forward thinking approach to image making and storytelling. In addition to having been commissioned by nearly every major international publication including Vanity Fair, The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, Time, Newsweek, and Life, Vincent is considered a pioneer for both his innovative tilt/shift and aerial photography and in the field of HD-capable DSLR cameras.

The book arrived today and I am amazed by the stunning aerial photographs in this book
By Dennis Becker
Several months ago the Washington Post published a picture section with some of the pictures in Air by Vincent Laforet. After seeing them , I immediately had to find this book and purchase it. It had not yet been published but the publisher was taking orders. The book arrived today and I am amazed by the stunning aerial photographs in this book. The bulk of the photographs were taken at night, with a few taken at dusk, dawn, or during the day. Laforet captures all the color, detail and patterns of major cities throughout the world. They really convey the enormity of these large cities and present both macroscopic view and more microscopic views of the cities from the air. Some show the patterns, or lack of patterns, of the roadways and layout of the cities. Others show the skyscrapers taken from afar while others provide a closer view. The colors come from the myriad of lighting sources to produce a wide palette of vivid nighttime colors. I have always loved the old black & white photographs taken of New York City, but now seeing the city and its skyscrapers at night is even more thrilling.

The book itself is a coffee table book, measuring about 11" x15" and is quite hefty. It is printed on high quality paper. I mention this because Amazon incorrectly lists the size as being 5.9 x 0.9 x 8.3 inches. My only complaint about the book is that the pages do not lie flat. Many, if not most, pictures span two opposing pages and the curvature of the crease detracts from the visual impact of the photographs. The photographs were clearly taken with a very high resolution camera, which adds to the visual impact of the photographs. I showed the book to my wife and she, being very budget conscious, asked how much it cost. When I told her that it cost $59, she breathed a sigh of relief telling me that she though it cost over $100. Considering the quality of the photographs, this book is a real bargain. This book will likely appeal to photography aficionados and world travelers.

The sample photographs don't do justice to the photographs in the book.

Photos were great; font not so much.
By Harry Puncec
I too just received my copy of the book which I had preordered before publication. I'm a retired printer so naturally I checked out the quality of the printing and binding first and found both to be absolutely first class. No problem there. The paper stock used is appropriately heavy and opaque given that the photos were flooded with ink. Again, no problem.

The photos themselves were awesome! Reaction to art is highly personal so I won't comment too much on the photos except to say that the shots with shallow depth of field didn't always work for me. Printing photos across the gutter on a two page spread is doomed to be problematic and it was. The vast majority however were a marvel to view. I do have an objection to the type font and ink color choice used throughout, particularly the Foreword and Introduction, and that cost one star on how I rated the book. Using a thin, sans serif type and then printing in a shade of gray ink was a big mistake. Very artsy but not practical. It may work for some readers but I had to use a magnifying glass to read it.

I'll be proud to have this book on the coffee table.

AIR by Vincent Laforet
By Amazon Customer
This coffee-table book did not meet my expectations, especially after watching the CBS segment on Vincent Laforet. At the very least there could have been a small description accompanying each photo. Other than well-known landmarks far too much was left the reader to try to decipher what was photographed. I would not recommend this purchase to anyone. In fact, if I could, I would return it for a refund.

A Big Life in Advertising, by Mary Wells Lawrence

One of advertising’s all-time greats, Mary Wells Lawrence, shows us the American ad world from the 1950s through the 1980s in all its brilliance, excitement, fun and craziness.

She captures the thrill of being a young copywriter in the 1960s at Doyle Dane Bernbach, working for the dazzling, revolutionary Bill Bernbach (“There was something volcanic [about him] . . . a little like being in the company of Mao or Che or the young Fidel”); how he took on a car rental firm that barely existed, announced to the world it was Number Two and therefore it tried harder—and overnight made the unknown Avis second only to the mighty Hertz; how Bernbach’s “Think Small” campaign made big car–obsessed America fall in love with the unlikely Volkswagen; how his Polaroid ads explained the mysterious instant camera to the public without saying a word.

She writes about leaving Doyle Dane Bernbach (for seven years her Heaven on earth) for a new ad company, and how she made it her own, producing the simple and unforgettable “Plop Plop Fizz Fizz” Alka-Seltzer commercial by getting rid of the cartoon tablet, Speedy, and creating a frothy, luminous commercial composed of nothing but two Alka-Seltzers dropping into a crystal glass of water; how she gave Braniff Airways brilliant visibility by painting its airplanes fresh, vivid colors—and then fell in love with and married the head of the company.

She writes about her campaign for the French tourist bureau and how she used a single image—a country man on a bicycle—that today is still the symbol of France’s rural life . . . how she traveled the world for Betty Crocker’s casserole dishes, how she brought theatricality and fantasy to TV advertising.

She tells how she started Wells Rich Greene and ran it like a movie studio. She writes about the clients and the campaigns . . . how she created a new line of cosmetics—Love—for a conservative drug company (it became one of the most successful cosmetics launches in history) . . . how she helped save American Motors from bankruptcy, redesigned its cars and put together an ad campaign that did the unthinkable—compared its unknown Javelin with Ford’s beloved Mustang . . . how Midas was “Midasized”. . . how, when thousands of Ford dealers had gone out of business, the Ford ads focused
not on Ford’s cars but on the dedication of its workers, with the slogan “Quality is Job One”; how she made New York the place to be when it was seen as a sinking ship, with the slogan “I Love New York.”

She writes about taking Wells Rich Greene public and how she became the first woman CEO of a company on the New York Stock Exchange . . . how she made a movie with the last of the Hollywood moguls, Jack Warner. She tells how she transformed a dilapidated, once-famous villa, La Fiorentina, at Cap Ferrat (a Nazi stronghold during the war) into a Mediterranean Eden, and writes about her battle with cancer. She talks about her refusal to globalize Wells Rich Greene and her decision, finally, to sell the company she’d built into the fastest-growing ad agency in history, and what happened to it afterward.

Amazon.com Review
A colorful mix of historical narrative, revealing personal memoir, and sassy industry tell-all, A Big Life in Advertising offers up Mary Wells Lawrence's bubbling take on life, love, and plugging products. Well, spills it into your lap, actually. Spanning four decades in the world of advertising and the life of one of its star players, A Big Life oozes with juicy details and insider revelations.

After an inspiring stint as one of the infamous Bill Bernbach's protgs, Lawrence really began her career at Jack Tinker & Partners, revolutionizing the images of such brands as Alka-Seltzer and Braniff Airways. But when denied the title of president, Lawrence "let loose the bear," as she puts it, and with the creative team of Stewart Greene and Dick Rich, set up shop as Wells Rich Greene. Over the course of the next quarter century, Lawrence and her cast of characters "made theatre out of the advertising business," giving brands like Benson & Hedges, American Motors, TWA, Midas, and Procter & Gamble's Gleem toothpaste their turn on the stage of stardom. While Lawrence's story is less about her agency's creative work and more about her impressions of and interactions with virtually everyone who was anyone in the advertising world of the '70s and '80s, she does include glimpses into her own childhood, life as a mother, and battles with cancer, adding a touch of reality to an otherwise glittering world. Some readers may feel Lawrence's opinion of her own beauty and charm plays too prominent a role in her reminiscing, but she was, after all, an adventurous queen bee in a glamorous world. Her chatty style of writing, and her ebullient enthusiasm for all she has experienced and accomplished, make this book read more like a novel than a memoir. It's an entertaining, fast-paced tale of a big star's big life. --S. Ketchum

From Publishers Weekly
When an autobiography's first sentence pays tribute to a memory of little black dance dresses that showed off the author's Norwegian legs, you know you're in for something grand. Lawrence doesn't disappoint, with this memoir about her rise in the advertising world of the 1960s, when a Volkswagen ad that cried "Think Small" was considered revolutionary. She writes first about working with the legendary Bill Bernbach at his agency, where she crafted well-regarded, theatrical Betty Crocker ads to sell the first instant casserole mixes, then describes starting her own agency with her mother as receptionist. One of the visionaries of 20th-century advertising, Lawrence was also a woman in a man's business world, and a youngster pitching bold ideas to fusty older corporate types. But her robust approach got noticed, and taglines like "I can't believe I ate the whole thing," "Plop, plop, fizz, fizz: oh, what a relief it is!" and especially "I love New York" still loom large in the public's memory. Her candor in describing her agency's failures and her own problems during the heady, mostly successful run of the company give the book weight and humanity, imparting some cautionary tales for those in the biz. However, it's Lawrence's generally upbeat tone that lingers past the last page. She delivers a beguiling look inside 30 years of the zippy, fast-moving ad culture and does so with the kind of witty, charming self-deprecation often seen in the ads she created. Photos.

From The New Yorker
In the nineteen-sixties, the stiff, information-heavy ads of the previous decade were buried beneath a wave of hip, daring TV commercials and print campaigns as the Wasps who had ruled Madison Avenue gave way to a more diverse crowd of copywriters and art directors. Lawrence was the head of the ad agency Wells Rich Greene during this period, and her account is true to the spirit of that revolution: insouciant, ebullient, and, above all, stylish. She provides a behind-the-scenes look at some of the best ad campaigns she was involved in, including "Plop, plop, fizz, fizz," "Flick your Bic," and "I Love New York," and, along with descriptions of day-to-day combat with clients and competitors, offers vivid sketches of life in the swinging sixties. The result is that most unusual of books—an entertaining business memoir.

Less than Meets the Eye

Narcissism never had it so good. The personal pronoun is overdone even though this is an autobiography. This book lacks context in almost every instance. Years from now, many readers will remember that Mary Wells and Harding Lawrence had a grand time living on the French Riviera and the Caribbean. They won't have more than a clue how the couple worked together on Braniff (which went bankrupt), or how Mary came to claim and reclaim the Continental Airlines account (bankrupt a couple of times) or felt about a client with little chances for long-term success, American Motors (bought-out before it could go bankrupt). (See the pattern here?) The writing is sometimes a twisted jumble -- one can almost envision the author speaking into a tape recorder as she "wrote" this book. If you're inclined to get this volume, a used paperback will suffice.

For old ad guys and gals
By A Customer
This is indeed a poorly written book, but it does share the insight of a great icon of the 70s and 80s ad game. For those who were/are in advertising, the perspective Lawrence gives is fun to remember when people and personalities really made a difference. An easy read, a few insights but really like reminiscing with a colleague about the "good old days." Lots of us would have loved to have just one of those tales to tell. The other reviews I've read on Amazon are pretty accurate. Reader beware.

From the Golden Age
By Amazon Customer
Mary Wells Lawrence took the advertising industry by storm in the 1960's by becoming the first woman, and the first true celebrity to dominate Madison Avenue. Her advertising and business accomplishments are part of modern marketing history. However the drive; confidence and determination that made her success a reality are outlined in a simple, easy to read and easier to enjoy prose that made her the dominant force in a business that was, and still is, dominated at the top by men. Her secret seems to be a total devotion to talent and to client. She found, nurtured and generously rewarded the best writing and art direction skills of the day and she totally immersed herself in the business of the clients that she served. Her story is warm, funny, and totally lacking in self promotion. Its provides a behind the scenes peek at the blood; sweat;tears and talent that produced the most memorable ads of a generation.

Innovation Strategy for the Knowledge Economy (Business Briefcase Series), by Debra M Amidon

Innovation Strategy for the Knowledge Economy is intended for managers who have practiced the best of quality and re-engineering management techniques and are ready to transform their organizations with the systematic notions of knowledge creation and application. It is for organization leaders who prefer to be inspired with innovation strategy than hit over the head with change management techniques. It does not deal with barriers, hurdles, or conflicts to be resolved; rather, it paints a possible vision of how we can take advantage of our collective learning to move an enterprise forward.

This book provides the reader with a sound, practical framework for instituting innovation strategy beyond the traditional definition of flow of parts or finances. At the core is an understanding of the dual value of knowledge (content) and innovation (process) using 'real-time' learning as the methodology.
Innovation Strategy for the Knowledge Economy introduces new managerial concepts such as:
Value-System versus Value-Chain
Strategic Business Network (SBN) versus Strategic Business Unit (SBU)
Customer Success versus Customer Satisfaction
It is an invaluable resource for both managers and organization leaders.

Innovation - A Definite Leverage Point
By Robert G. Turner
When I first read Innovation Strategy for the Knowledge Economy in 1998, I was amassing a large library of KM books. I had accomplished a similar effort in the mid-80's on the subject of innovation. Because of the relatedness of these two efforts, I grasped rather quickly the importance Debra Amidon was placing on innovation--my ken was clear. I believed she was and is, more than figuratively speaking, on the money.

From the beginnings of the focus on KM, there has consistently been the challenging people/technology dichotomy. Amidon's perspective on innovation provides an extremely insightful focus on a third dimension in the core KM picture--process. Debra Amidon obviously had enough grounding in both the people and technology domains of knowledge activities that she intuitively values the innovation issue.

The American culture and economy has always been fueled by high capacity for innovation. While we have kept the pace, other nations are increasing their innovation quotient. Now, in a new knowledge era, Debra Amidon is offering advanced ways to leverage innovation. Much of what she presents seems familiar, nevertheless, the way she weaves it all together and the new elements she presents takes innovation to a new level in the enterprise. For me, this book becomes more valuable each year, particularly as we find that the nature of innovation in our enterprises becomes more complex with higher stakes than ever.

A book full of insights with a practical framework.
By D. J. Skyrme
You don't usually expect to pick up a management book with a photograph of Claude Monet's lily pond. The reason is that Amidon describes Monet as "daring to be different". Furthermore, in order to see the big picture you have to stand back. This book helps you step back to see the unfolding panaroma of the knowledge economy and knowledge management.
In a field where there is no shortage of books, few can match the insights and perspectives of this one. It traces the 'momentum of knowledge management' and gives a practical framework for knowledge innovation, the next wave. There are thought provoking concepts and practical questions to assess your organization's capability for knowledge innovation. For me, what sets this book apart from the many others is its high level of insight and original thinking, all expressed in a lucid style that is packed into an ideal format for those occasions when you want inspiration coupled with practical suggestions. So, if you are thinking about your organization's or your nation's future in the knowledge economy, then this is the book to read. It really is the Ken.

A must read for in todays global business environment
By amasland@walldata.com
Debra has devoted considerable time and energy to develop a practical but compelling approach to knowledge innovation. She provides a sound background on management theory but quickly extends her insights into useful strategies for assessing the current status of knowledge innovation within an organization. Senior managers can easily use Debra's work to improve the state of knowledge innovation within their enterprise and their industry.
Debra also provides valuable insights into the place of alliances and partnerships in today's global economy. Any company that wants to remain competitive can gain useful advise from reviewing the benefits of building a strong business alliance program that shares knowledge among its partner network.
