Worth taking a chance

First, I must point out, that all the 5 star reviews are not doing the sale of this book any favors, especially when 73% of the reviews are written by people that have never reviewed another book on Amazon (at the time of this review). This is a big red flag of caution for me and many other shoppers. Blame it on lack of sleep or too much alcohol though, but I went ahead and bought the book; and after reading the first paragraph I slapped myself silly for not downloading a sample. I'm not the type to return books though so I sucked it up and continued reading. And like an evil author that A. American is, he dragged me kicking and screaming into his book and made me like it.
In my opinion, this book is not worthy of 5 stars. It has punctuation errors (though for the size of the book it's not bad). It has grammatical errors: sentences with too many words ("If they of them try to follow us", "There's is"), sentences with missing words, and parts of it were just too wordy ("I pulled it out, pulled it out of the sack"). In some instances there is way too much detail. As the story progresses though, either the author gets better or I just became so involved in the story that I stopped caring too much. Combining all these errors and I just cannot say I loved the book.
Under normal circumstances I would remind others of the option to download a sample and decide for yourself if you want to continue, but I think in this situation the reader would miss out on the underlying story within this book. The blurb also doesn't do the story justice. There is more to this book than just a man walking home after all the power goes out. It is a long book and the author takes his time setting up the story. But once he starts dropping in clues as to what is really going on, well then, you just have to keep reading, because this is about more than just electronics going out. It is for this reason that I give it 4 stars.
This story is set up for a second book but, and my hats off to the author for this, it has a satisfying enough ending. No huge cliff hanger here. If you are a fan of this genre you will probably like this book, because though you have probably read better, I can guarantee, you've read worse. I will definitely be looking for more from this author.

Good story, iffy execution

I will start by saying I did enjoy this book. That said, I need to qualify my statement with a little more information. The premise was good, combining elements of other TEOTWAWKI books dealing with power infrastructure failures (One Second After, Dark Grid, Lights Out, etc), while keeping the story based on a journey rather than survival at a specific location. Unfortunately, I found that the book really did not live up to its potential for a number of reasons.
The most glaring shortcoming is the atrocious editing. I'm no grammar nazi, but this book is full of extremely obvious and grating spelling and grammar errors that really do interfere with the enjoyment of the book. Misspelled words, multiple words bunched together without spaces, repeating characters, missing or misplaced punctuation, quotes that are not opened or closed properly, and so on. Sometimes I would have to read a section 3-4 times just to figure out what is trying to be said and by whom.
The second disappointment I had in this book was the choice of the author to choose a first person narrative for most of the book, but then change to third person POV for secondary characters or events. At times, the first person narrative would be muddied by the protagonist not only telling the story, but also conducting internal monologue.
Story-wise, my biggest gripe was how easily the good guys seemed to get what they needed for survival. Granted there is an explanation that some of the characters were into preparedness, but even so people making a journey would have much more trouble obtaining, retaining, and transporting supplies such as food, weapons, and so on. There were several passages where a character would pass up opportunities for supplies because they "had everything they needed" or words to that effect. It seemed overly optimistic to me given the scenario presented.
While I really did enjoy the story and the journey, I didn't really care that much about the characters. I liked them ok, but I was never really got to the point that I empathized with their situation or was concerned for their well-being. I think they could have been made to be more personable and likable with a little more effort in that area.
Finally, many terms and acronyms used in the book would not be familiar to many people - even many fans of this genre. The majority of these terms are conspicuously left undefined, unless you reference the glossary at the end of the book. This seems like it was either done to try to establish credibility with survivalists and preppers, or was simply the result of laziness... I'm not sure which.
I'm not trying to beat up on this book too much, I just feel that these issues really detracted from its potential. The premise was good and there was an obvious effort by the author to reference real survival techniques and gear. Most importantly, it was fun to read.
Despite my complaints, I would still happily read a sequel if one is made. It is my hope that the author will learn from the mistakes in this first book and perhaps obtain some professional editing assistance for any future projects.
Pros: Entertaining story. Good premise. Generally exciting. Good first effort for a self published book.
Cons: Poor grammar and composition. Frustrating to read at times. Stretches believably. Characters not especially lovable.

Needs an editor

One of my Soldiers brought this book out to the field during a 45-day field problem, and all the guys read this during our down time. We all still make fun of this one and it gave us a lot of inside jokes.
Why one star? I don't care what anyone says, this manuscript never went to a real editor. The grammar/spelling is good, but any real editor would have red-lined 60% of the stuff in this book. Anything that can be said in 11 words, this author says it in 110 words. He will describe every...single....little....detail...of everything he does. It totally takes away from the plot. Like a whole page on tying up a clothesline, or a whole page on boiling a cup of water. (I'm not exaggerating)The list goes on.
One star because the author insists on listing the exact brand, model number, and nomenclature of every possible item in the book. Nothing can ever be just a knife....it has to be what it is listed as in a Cabela's catalog. Nobody ever holsters a pistol.....instead they holster their Springfield XD .45 in their Uncle Mike's Nylon IWB holster then a paragraph about hot it is worn. This book is kinda like reading an outdoor outfitter catalog.
Everybody in the book is either totally evil or totally good. No gray area.
Everybody in the book is either totally prepared for WWIII or absolutely unprepared to survive one week. There is no middle.
And the food! The protagonist starts off with half a case of MRE's. The first 35 pages literally mentions MRE's 35 times (I counted). Every time the protagonist encounters a good guy, he is invited to huge Thanksgiving Day size meals to celebrate stuff like killing the bad neighbor next door or whatever. Not kidding. For a book about survival, the protagonist sure never goes hungry at all or needs to look for any food (while all the bad guys are starving wretches) because at every other page he gets fed or cooks a big MRE meal before going to bed. (We counted....this dude ate more on his walk than we did in the field! lol)
And the luck. There is never any conflict really....every time the protagonist looks like finally he will have it hard or there may be some interesting conflict.......he gets incredibly lucky. It's boring because the good guy has it easier than most people do on a bad day at work.
The going home is even boring because he constantly reminds us that his family is safe and has plenty to survive indefinitely and they are surrounded by neighbors who will look out for them. Luckily enough the guy next door just got home from Afghanistan that very week and will also watch out for them. Yay! So much suspense. Where is the urgency to get home? There really is none.
It kinda starts to get a plot about the government causing the disaster....but it is so far out tinfoil hat stuff that it detracts from its own plot.
Walking 230 miles with a 60 lbs bag? Ok you have fun buddy. When I was a young Soldier conditioned to walk 25 miles in a night, or 100 miles in 4 days, we kept our bags down to 35lbs. No way in hell I'd try to carry 60 lbs 230 miles even when I was a young infantryman almost in Olympic class conditioning. There is no survival advice in this book. The guy is carrying 3 sleep systems and 2 cooking systems. He said he looked for non-essential gear to toss, but only tossed away a couple wrenches. 230 miles? No way dude! All my Soldiers agreed we could get that monstrous ridiculous bag down to around 20 lbs and be just as comfortable. I mean, it is winter in Florida! Even that is a huge stroke of luck! The extra clothes and shoes and the ghillie suit and ridiculous grill and all that silly stuff would be in the ditch.
The author is a guy that is writing about things he has no idea about. He is so addicted to his gadgets he would die of panic if he were ever separated from his stuff.
Any pros? The author does make an effort to have good ethics overall. Unlike some other authors in this genre, he writes in a voice that does not glorify unnecessarily harming people during a very bad situation. For that, I tip my hat. But he is just naive in general about writing and survival.
