This story is extremely sad but it is very engaging and it engages the topic of French responsibility for the atrocious events that occurred during the German occupation. I would definitely recommend it

Tragic story of little known collaboration with the German enemy by certain French people, but also about the heroism and compassion of others. I am an intermediate French language student, but I rarely needed help from my dictionary.

La Rafle du V�l d'Hiv comes alive!

I'm here in Paris for the summer for an NEH Seminar entitled Visions of the Dark Years: World War II and its legacy in France, and I'm doing a project on the "rafle du Vel d'Hiv"- the massive round-up of Jews that took place in Paris on July 16th, 1942. I purchased this book in French at the bookstore at Le Memorial de la Shoah, not knowing that it had been translated from English. The story is haunting, and interesting, as we follow it in flashbacks. I am doing an annotated bibliography of books on the subject for my seminar project. This story will appeal to my younger students, teaching them at the same time of this shameful episode of French collaboration with the German occupiers, under the Vichy government. France was the only occupied European country to pass its own laws regarding Jews, which were even stricter than those of the Third Reich. By looking the other way,and pretending not to know where the Jews were being transported after the local French camps at Drancy and Pithiviers (they were immediately transported to Auschwitz) some 9,000 French police catalogued and arrested over 13,000 French and foreign Jews residing in France, and sent them to the Velodrome d'Hiver, a large stadium in Paris. This is a shameful episode in French history, retold in a poignant and gripping fashion.

This is a book which has at its core the ...

This is a book which has at its core the clinician in mind. The introductory chapters and discussion of physics provide a solid background knowledge, but it is not overwhelming and maintains an element of pragmatism which is refreshing.

The chapters are organized well - mostly anatomically with helpful sections not on just interpretation but on obtaining the images and practical tips that are helpful for many levels of learners - myself at moderate experience with specific types of ultrasound.

The videos are pure gold - a huge bonus with a lot of helpful images both for obtaining and interpreting images that supplements, if not replacing, a hands-on instruction session.

Will be using this for much of my career I suspect - in peds hospital medicine.

I am just beginning my postgraduate training in Emergency Medicine and have an interest in bedside or "point-of-care ultrasound". This text is a comprehensive and interesting take on this growing field.

A text section typically begins with background information providing history, perspective and evidence behind a particular point-of-care ultrasound application. Relevant anatomy and physiology is reviewed before jumping into techniques for image acquisition. This is then followed by expertly written, yet digestible text on image interpretation. All of the above are accompanied by high quality schematics, photos and ultrasound images.

Included with the physical copy of the text is access to an electronic version. With no slight to the physical text, the e-version is really where the book shines. It displays beautifully on the iPad and can also be accessed via the web. The iPad version has the added benefit of being accessible while offline. Also included with the e-version are a huge collection of videos that add substantially to the aforementioned schematics, photos and still images. I have found myself using the e-version on shift as an easily accessible reference.

This book is an excellent resource for Emergency Medicine trainees, but also for those who generally have an interest in point-of-care ultrasound. It is a great way to fill a knowledge translation gap currently existing in many medical curricula.

Point of Care Ultrasound for Hospitalists or anyone who is in the field

I am a hospitalist who have been incorporating point of care ultrasound (POC US) for many years and the lead POC US person for our hospitalist department. Over the years, I have read many different POC US textbooks, articles and journals, and I think this is one of the very best books out there. It is designed for those who are just starting to learn POC US, as it gives a comprehensive review from the basics all the way up to advanced techniques. It can also serve as a great shelf reference for those who are experienced in the field.

Some point of care US books simplify technique too much to a point where it is not true to life - for e.g., not all US images are easy to get - so I love the fact that this book gives you very specific tips on how to obtain difficult images - some only the experienced sonographers would know by experience. And then there are other textbooks for radiologists or ultrasound techs full of technical details that are, to be honest, not all that relevant to POC US. So I appreciate the fact that this books strikes a right balance where it does not compromise on technical fundamentals that you must know, but does not "overwhelm" you with scientific jargons either.

It is written by a hospitalist (Dr. Nilam Soni) who is the country's leading expert of POC US in the field of hospital medicine. I really like the layout of the book where it is extremely easy to find the information you need - you won't waste your time jumping from one section to another to find the info you need. The chapters are concise, but clearly explains everything you need to learn per topic. It also has many helpful how-to videos, which are invaluable.

I think this is one of the best POC US textbooks to have and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who is in the field.

My mom had this book when she was my age (17, but was 16 when I ordered it for my birthday) it covers literally so much! Palmistry, dice, cards, pendulum, hand writing meaning, finger and hand meaning, SO MANY FORMS OF DIVINATION!! This book is perfect for a beginner!!

A look at the

This is a good basic introduction to various forms of divination, written by a husband-and-wife team I wish I knew more about. There are some surprises to be found, like an analysis of the belief underpinnings of yoga, which have been largely lost in today's yoga boom, where yoga, in practice, has often become aerobic exercise with a New Age twist. While the throughness of the analysis of the different subjects covered may vary, they attempt to be fair to their subject matter while maintaining some professional distance and skepticism.

Good survey and reference work

PREMISE & NATURE OF THE BOOK
This book concisely describes 17 types of "psychic sciences" (i.e. astrology, cartomancy, colorology, dice, dominoes, dreams, graphology, moleosophy, numerology, palmistry, phrenology, physiognomy, radiesthesia, tasseography, superstitions/omens, telepathy/ESP, yoga, etc. Despite the title, I have a problem calling these sciences. In a survey published in the Winter 2001 issue of Acquisition Review Quarterly, the Journal of the Defense Acquisition University (page 68), 77% of responders agreed that "The word "science" must be restricted to those fields in which archival history, established laws, adequate empirical evidence, and adequate metrics have been established to form a science." Only 23% agreed that "Academics should be free to call any subject that they choose a "science" with no institutionally established requirements and standards for linguistic quality control." The authors do, however, caveat a number of entries as lacking empirical validation or being unscientific--i.e. superstitions. Still, as a popular book, this one contains no bibliography, references, footnotes, or authors' bios though there is an index.

COMMENTS ON SELECTED INDIVIDUAL TOPICS
Of course, the coverage of individual topics is somewhat limited, however, judicious use of drawings, figures, & charts greatly enhances this work. It does not, however, include Runes (e.g. The Book of Runes, 25th Anniversary Edition) or the I Ching (The I Ching or Book of Changes). Also, it doesn't address the meanings of the Tarot's Major Arcana (see The Complete Guide to the Tarot). In the large chapter on Astrology, the authors chose to ignore Uranus, Neptune, & Pluto (Pluto (American Federation of Astrologers)) as well as planetary aspects, elements, etc. (The New A to Z Horoscope Maker and Delineator (Revised and Expanded)) On the other hand, they include ruling planets of day & year. Some of their descriptions seem to disagree with some other astrology books I've read--as do some entries on colors (e.g. interviewee dress recommendations etc. though their comments on p. 111: the colors in national flags of allied/axis powers in WWI & II were most interesting. It was also very interesting that number readings were not consistent across various methods (e.g. dice vs. dominoes).

MY FAVORITE PARTS
I especially liked their many telepathy/clairvoyance experiments pp. 331-334, some of which (e.g. #14 and pp. 423-4: example #11) appeared to be double blind--which reminded me of telepathy/clairvoyance tests very scientifically and successfully performed as reported in the Transactions of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers some years ago. The need for double blindness is easily shown from the Amazing Hans demonstration in which a horse was apparently able to multiply when given two numbers by its owner. Upon filming and viewing it closely, investigators discovered a "tell" by which the horse, watching its owner, merely detected when he wished the horse to stop stomping the ground--providing the correct answer. Furthermore, the authors astutely point out that:
p. 235: "As an authority succinctly puts it: 'Every number has a certain power which is not expressed by the figure or symbol employed to denote quantity only. This power rests in an occult connection between the relation of things and the principles in nature of which they are the expression.'"

I'd be more comfortable, however, if the authors had provided some reference to where they obtained the contents of this book!
