Finally a book on Blind Tasting! Also the first with clear descriptions of wine styles

Although there are some very good books on wine tasting this is the first that I know of focusing on blind tastings.

It gives a concise but fairly complete introduction to winemaking and viticulture and then summarizes each of the main winemaking regions of the world in order to give the reader the fundamentals to spot wines and varietals in a logical manner.

It is also the first publication I've seen to give proper crib sheets comparing wines from different regions made from the same varietals.

A must have for MW/MS students and wine lovers who have fun doing blind tastings.

The title is perfect - this is one of the best introductory wine books I have ever read. It goes over basically every region in the entire world of wine and gives all of the most important information on each. If you are looking for extreme detail then this is not the book for you, but if you want something that quickly gives you the info then this is perfect. There are very few books that are this efficient - there is zero fluff or worthless information - that makes it somewhat dense but it also means you don't waste your time.

Not Enough Meat In This First Volume

October Faction Volume 1 was a study of contrasts for me. I both liked and didn't like it; weirdly enough, it wasn't that part was good and part was bad. Rather, that I liked and disliked the same exact thing at the same time. The art was interesting but I didn't love it; the story never had an arc and meandered everywhere but I didn't get annoyed; the characters seemed really distinct and yet they weren't; the monsters felt fresh but none were. I'm not sure how to make sense of it other than to say that by the end, it just didn't pull me in - the promise of the first few pages never materialized for me by the end.

Story: Frederick Allan is a former monster hunter, now retired and lecturing at the local university. His kids have grown up and want to follow in their father's footsteps - but he's not quite sure he likes that idea. Compounding things, his former partner contracted werewolf disease and fights it every day. When his wife seeks to get his attention and lets loose an old enemy, things get fairly crazy for the everyone.

I wish the story had focused on one member of the family. We're given small bits of each - the son and the ghosts he sees on a schoolmate, the daughter wanting more excitement, the wife feeling neglected by her once exciting husband, and the put-upon professor. We get little glimpses but never anything more from the characters. I kept expecting to see a poignant moment but it all seemed to be vignettes that never really fleshed anyone out.

I enjoyed the art - it was suitably creepy with a monochromatic tonality and rough, unfinished quality. The watercolor-like style has a dreamy, painterly feel that suits the story perfectly. Oddly enough, like the story, the art never defines the characters and so they look as sketchy as they are written. Perhaps another reason I never really felt I 'knew' any of the characters.

There's not really a story arc here and some events intertwine but it felt fairly random. Perhaps things will coalesce more in future issues. But for me, I really wanted something more than we see in this first volume. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided buy the publisher.

Be Patient - This Builds Quickly to a Satisfying Conclusion

At the outset we find ourselves in a dark, gloomy classroom as Frederick Allan, retired monster hunter, lectures about terrible things that go bump in the night. Humorless and grim, this tale feels like it's going to be dark, angsty, heavy going. But wait.

Bit by bit we are introduced to the rest of the Allan clan, we meet the supporting cast, we are introduced to a range of villains, we answer a few questions, we add a bunch of new questions, and by the end the stage is set for a very entertaining family saga.

Frederick turns out to have a very dry and subtle sense of humor. His wife Deloris, who is introduced as a sour malcontent, turns out to be a much more interesting piece of work. The son is nervier and the daughter is less angsty, and both are funnier and braver, than one first suspects. Something that starts out as just some Gothic version of Orange County turns into a much more interesting and engaging ensemble performance. (Heck, the set piece in which Frederick takes the kids out to bury their first body is worth the price of admission on its own.)

This is all held together by very solid art work. Sure it's gloomy and grey and dark, but Damien Worm, (best name, ever), mixes it up. There are full page detailed scene and setting panels, kaw-pow action bits, and a lot of "family portrait" type group shots. There is a lot of attention to detail, but those detailed panels are mixed in with more impressionistic drawings. And, this is important, the characters are usually very expressive and natural looking. They are drawn to look "right" in every panel and their characters and thoughts and emotions are evident. There is nothing cartoony or careless about the figures. When they are then placed in detailed and evocative environments the effect is convincing and compelling.

So, the upshot is that you get good characters, a good story, snappy dialogue and a lot of things that are really interesting to look at. That does it for me.

Is this an Addams Family for the new millennium?

The October Faction is a graphic novel about Frederick Allan, a monster hunter who is now retired. His children want to follow in his footsteps ... an idea that Frederick doesn't care for. The daughter, Vivian, proves herself more than capable, though I'm still sure why the son/brother has any interest in hunting monsters.

In a story that centers around a family of monster hunters, it's certainly no surprise that there are some evil characters around but there is nothing outrageously monstrous (for a horror story), though 'Dante' makes for an interesting and intriguing semi-villain.

I'd initially thought that this book was going to be about the children, beginning to take over the business from their father, but it segued to the father not quite giving it up, then to the a man who is shot by Frederick in the parlor, buried, and rises again in the presence of his sister.

I couldn't quite get a handle on the story, but I think that's because there isn't one yet. We're still in the phase of discovering who the characters are. This might be fine in some cases, particularly in a comic book series that will be ongoing, but without at least a hint of where these characters are headed, it just rambles.

The artwork is quite unique. It is sharp, angular, and just enough off-kilter as to suggest a world that is also off-kilter. The coloring is beautiful. It is dark and rich with patterns. For me, this art was the saving grace of a book that meandered around a story. However, even with the art, there were strange issues. For some odd reason, an occasional panel would be blurry. It was too often to be anything other than planned, but because the art is unique enough (and beautiful) as it is, we really didn't need this distraction just to have the art make a statement.

This is an odd book, in so many ways. I liked the art and thought that the characters showed some promise, but the story rambled so much that there was nothing to sink my teeth in to. This is one of those books that if I should see the next volume, I may pick it up, I may not, but if I don't read the next volume, I don't think I'll be missing anything.

Looking for a good book? The October Faction is a dark graphic novel about a family of monster hunters, but nothing much happens in this volume.

About the Author

Steve Mariotti, founder of the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), is considered one of today’s leading experts in education for at-risk youth.� In 1982, he changed career paths when he decided to leave the corporate sector and become a special education teacher in the New York City public school system.

Mariotti’s first assignment was in the East New York section of Brooklyn, and his last was in the Fort Apache section of the South Bronx. During his six-and-a-half years teaching, Mariotti discovered he could successfully motivate even his most challenging students by teaching them how to run a business. This experience inspired him to create a new kind of program--the first to bring entrepreneurial education to low-income youth.

In 1987, Mariotti founded The Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE). Raised in Flint, Michigan, Mariotti received his B.B.A in business economics and his M.B.A. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He has also studied at Harvard University, Stanford University, and Brooklyn College. He started his professional career as a treasury analyst for Ford Motor Company before founding his own company, Mason Import/Export Services.

Caroline Glackin, Ph.D., is a “pracademic” who has successfully worked as a microenterprise and small business owner and manager, as an executive director of a community development financial institution, and as an academic in areas of community development finance, entrepreneurship, and management. She is Entrepreneurship Faculty at the University of North Carolina - Fayetteville State University. She has been assisting entrepreneurs in achieving their dreams for over 30 years.

Glackin earned a doctorate from the University of Delaware, where her research emphasis was on microfinance. She received an M.B.A. from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a B.A. from Bryn Mawr College. Her professional career began with the DuPont Company, American Bell, Bell Atlantic, and American Management Systems. She has consulted for businesses and not-for-profit agencies in turnaround and high-growth situations. After exiting a family business, she became the executive director of a community development financial institution serving businesses and not-for-profits.

Dr. Glackin has succeeded in leading change in the practical fields of her research and has received numerous honors and awards. These include the first Gloeckner Business Plan Award at The Wharton School, the Minority Business Advocate of the Year for Delaware from the U.S. Small Business Administration, and the She Knows Where She’s Going Award from Girls Inc. Dr. Glackin cochaired the Delaware Governor’s Task Force for Financial Independence. She has participated in the Cornell University Emerging Markets Think Tank Series and has presented her research and pedagogy at numerous professional conferences.

Pathetic

I'm a successful college student in my fourth year and have never encountered such a poor excuse for a course textbook. The entire book could be cut down to a few chapters, there is so much filler that I can hardly stand to read it. How many times can you repeat or rephrase the same things over and over and over again? Every chapter is littered with common sense statements followed by unnecessarily long explanations of those statements that don't actually teach you anything. Then you turn the page and it's the same statements as before only creatively reworded! I'm reduced to just reading through the section titles trying to find something that I didn't read a couple pages ago. There is hardly any unique insight into entrepreneurship that a typical 3rd grader couldn't come up with. This book is satisfactory for grade school or MAYBE a high school entry level class, NOT a college course. What a waste of money.

The best of it's kind

This is very much in textbook format but is far more engaging and interesting than any other textbook we have used. Extrememely well organized, it's broken down into 3 major sections, with each chapter just the right length for the subject matter, and lends itself easily to expansion if time is available. Seasoned heavily with real life stories and quips, even a student that doesn't like reading or school could find this course very interesting and provides a good springboard for a summer business or pt biz while still in school. I think this should become a required course for every high schooler, with so many kids not having the first clue to how to start a business, yet the majority have said they would like to have their own business at some point in their life.

In short, this is a 5 star, (6 stars if they were available), because it's very interesting reading, well organized, and clearly written. There's a variety of projects suggested thruout, as well as a wealth of resources listed in the back. I was thrilled with this course-and will probably not part with my copy when we are done! I even know of some adults that have used this as a primer to start their own business.

A NEW TREATISE FROM ELGAR’S ‘NEW HORIZONS IN ENVIRONMENTAL AND ENERGY LAW’ SERIES

At first glance, the title of this book might seem either confusing or incomprehensible to all but environmentalists or environmental lawyers. What the term ‘emissions trading’ refers to, however, is a ‘market based’ instrument that, in the words of the author, ‘policy makers can use to achieve environmental objectives’.

The most important environmental objective that one can think of is, of course, the reduction of greenhouse gases worldwide. “Emissions trading” is one of several instruments, or systems, if you like, which allows polluters (installations that emit large quantities of greenhouse gases) to ‘trade’ their abatement activities with emitters who, we assume, do not pollute as much.

Therefore, says the author, an associate professor of law at the University of Groningen, ‘the emitter with the lowest abatement costs will sell its abatement efforts in the form of emission allowances to polluters who have higher abatement costs….. it is a cost-effective means of reducing emissions.’

Since the concept of emissions trading was first proposed back in 1968 by a North American scientist, a considerable number of initiatives have been launched worldwide aimed at implementing such systems effectively – all, or most of which, are detailed in this book.

The Kyoto Protocol is probably one of the best known examples, although not embraced by the United States. Nonetheless, it was the US SO2 trading system which, to a large extent, inspired the European Emissions Trading Scheme (the EU ETS). The author then points out that in 2005, the EU ETS started as a multi-jurisdictional attempt to reduce CO2 emissions primarily from four broad sectors: energy, ferrous metals production, minerals and pulp and paper.

The main issue dealt with a thorough and scholarly manner in this book is therefore how to design an emissions trading scheme, including how to identify the possible problems involved … how to address such problems when they arise… and with whom emissions trading systems can be linked. Inevitably the advantages and disadvantages of emissions trading are carefully considered throughout the learned text, as are other key considerations such as design variants and the consequent variety of choice faced by policy makers in deciding which system to implement.

Speaking of which, policy makers in the relevant government bodies will undoubtedly consider this book essential reading, as will environmental lawyers of course, as well as technical consultants advising in this field. With its meticulous footnoting throughout, not to mention the detailed bibliography of over 20 pages, this book certainly emerges as a superb research tool for those seeking to enhance their understanding of this important environmental topic.

About the Author

BETTY SIMKINS, PhD, is the Williams Companies Professor of Business and a Professor of Finance in the Department of Finance at Oklahoma State University's (OSU) Spears School of Business. She teaches energy finance, a course that she developed, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and also teaches executive education courses on energy finance for companies globally. Her primary area of research is risk management, including energy risk management, and she has published extensively in this area. Simkins has received a number of teaching awards at OSU, including the Regents Distinguished Teaching Award. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Financial Management Association, as coeditor of the Journal of Applied Finance, editor of FMA Online, and as past president of the Eastern Finance Association. Simkins worked in the corporate world for ConocoPhillips and Williams Companies.

RUSSELL SIMKINS is Manager of Proposal Services in the College of Engineering, Architecture, and Technology at Oklahoma State University (OSU) and a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Oklahoma. He has over thirty years of engineering experience and worked for ConocoPhillips, Fractionation Research Inc., Lubrizol Corporation, Southwest Research Institute, and the U.S. Department of Energy. Simkins has also been active in the engineering profession as a member of various working groups in the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), Coordinating Research Council (CRC), and American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) dealing with fuels and lubricants.

Excellent Learning Tool and Reference Book

"Energy Finance and Economics" is an excellent book for the student who is seeking to learn more about the industry or for the industry professional that needs a refresher on how the industry operates. The book provides the layperson an excellent starting point for an introduction to the world of energy finance and also provides sound, accurate data for industry professionals seeking to brush up on his or her skills. I would not recommend this book to someone with absolutely no knowledge of finance though. The book assumes the reader has at least had some exposure to finance.

After taking a college course utilizing this book as its required text and being an industry professional myself, I found that I was still able to learn a great deal from each chapter. The book is exceptionally informative and will remain in my library for quite some time as a reference guide when I need to look something up for work. It is also a relatively easy read. It is not too boring for those of us who have an active interest in the topics of energy and finance.

This book is interesting and the information within is timely and valuable. The most impressive thing to me was the liberal use of charts, and references within the book that actually work perfectly in a digital format. I read it on both my pc and tablet and the re sizing of the images and the ability to quickly return to page after clicking on a link for a resource is very nice. I often have books that if I click on a link to appendix it will not get me back to where I was.

The one thing I would like to see done, a lot of work, but it has a fabulous index that appears in back, but of course no page numbers but also no links back to book locations.

The book was so informative and easy to use that it enticed me to purchase two other from the Robert Kolb series. I had never been aware of this series but I can see myself working my way through the majority of them if they are as well done and written as this one.

This book is very well laid out and covers topics in a real world setting rather than in academic theory. I was able to see why the material was selected and why each example was used in this book. I took Betty Simkins course at Oklahoma State on my own time after I purchased the book and she is extremely knowledgeable, easy to approach and an industry experienced lady. I was further impressed when the company I recently joined gives a copy of this book to each employee for review and reference...and the management has no ties to Oklahoma State University or to the Simkins'.
