A hard read.

I bought this book to try to learn some basic principles about designing my own exhaust system. As an RF engineer, the principles were very similar and I did get some good information out of this book. A lot of research went into this and unfortunately there is little solid information on the topic, otherwise. Conjecture on the other hand is easy to find.

The problem is, this book is horribly outdated and presumably early 1900's English is hard to follow (the first book was published in 1962). I think most people would give the book 2 stars.

When the data was being taken, there were no catalytic converters, no multi-valve cylinder heads, no variable valve timing, no oxygen sensors, etc. Each of these things has an effect on how a modern exhaust system should be designed.

There also seems to be some contradictions. The reflections of the wave in the exhaust are caused by every perturbation, especially openings, like where two pipes join or a pipe expands into a muffler. The strongest effect comes from the very first opening, which is where the primary pipes join. This means that primary length is the single most important part of the exhaust system tuning. Yet they provide an equation that has nothing to do with the speed of the engine or how many cylinders are employed and later, they flat out state, that the primaries should be made 18" on a four cylinder engine and then the same for a six cylinder engine, without even using their calculation.

Bottom line: If you try to design your own exhaust system using only this book, you will have a very hard time of it and will likely achieve very little improvement in performance over just running it any way that fits. On the other hand, if you try to design your own exhaust system without reading this book, you will have no chance at all of improving exhaust performance. It's your choice, but beware, it is a very hard read.

Fascinating Story, Terrible Book

Jerry Lee Lewis is a fascinating man, given the many dramatic events of his life: a backwoods Louisiana boy catapulted to rock 'n roll fame, who deep down always believed that rock 'n roll was evil and that he was leading himself and his fans to the devil; a restless man who went through multiple marraiges starting in his teens, then fell from public grace and success by marrying the love of his life, his 13-year old cousin Myra; later their son drowned and their rocky marraige fell apart. A tell-all biography from Myra's perspective could have made a great book, but the writer, Murray Silver, mangles her story. At times it is unclear who's perspective the story is being told from: Myra doesn't even show up until several chapters into the book, as it tries to tell Jerry Lee's early story, but the book ends at their divorce. Like a bad children's biography, the book is filled with made up assumptions and thoughts that the writer could not have been privvy to. Silver makes Jerry Lee and Myra, who were uneducated yet passionate and conflicted people, sound imbecilic at times. He also glosses over important events (such as Myra's rape by another man before she got involved with Jerry, Jerry and Myra's summer romance before they got married, and the drowning death of their son), while devoting page after plodding page to such boring events as Jerry getting ripped off by unscrupulous agents who took advantage of his naivite.

So judge for yourself. If you really want to know the details of Myra and Jerry's story, you'll find a lot of them here, but the terrible writing keeps it from touching you, and distorts the story because, again, the writer's constant and inappropriate use of dialect makes everyone involved sound fairly stupid. There is one exception, when Myra describes Jerry Lee's reaction to the birth of his first daughter (born after his son drowned). Jerry Lee at first wouldn't hold or interact with her, but after 2 weeks his heart melted, he held and cared for her all the time he was home, even let the baby sleep in their bed and called his daughter not by her name but "my heart". It is a pity more of the events in the book weren't rendered with this kind of simplicity and compassion. Then we might have been brought closer to the fascinating story of the Killer and the only woman he really loved.

WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN' GOIN' ON...

Entertaining biography of rock and roller Jerry Lee Lewis. It details his rise from the poverty of rural Louisiana to become a rock and roll legend. Told by his wife of thirteen years, Myra Lewis, the book recounts an insider's view of those early days of rock and roll and of the rise of Jerry Lee Lewis in the annals of rock and roll.

Jerry grew up with his first cousin, Jimmy Lee Swaggart, who in his own right achieved a measure of notoriety, as a prominent preacher and televangelist. Lewis, however, a music lover from early childhood, wanted nothing more than to be a piano playing musician. A backwoods good ole boy, he shocked the country with his antics, topping it all off with his marriage to his thirteen year old cousin, Myra, an act which brought him unwelcome notoriety.

Known for his high energy performances, Jerry Lee Lewis lived hard, played hard, and worked hard at his music. His was a life of which legends are made. This book is an enjoyable, no holds barred narrative of that life.

A Royal Flush!

I haven't read a Regency novel or anything remotely close to it in over 20 years. Needless to say, I was a little unsure if I could bring myself around to liking that style of period romance again. What better place to start than a novella? I am so happy I chose this one!

I was pulled in right away and lost my concern as to whether I would be able to "get into" this type of romance again. Claire Firth has a remarkable way with words and flow. It was effortless and paced wonderfully.

Ralph and Sophia are wonderful characters to invest your time into. They are both passionate, stubborn and mature enough to show their vulnerabilities. I really enjoyed the unfolding of their feelings and their final acceptance of it. Their chemistry in the bedroom was spot on and very steamy!

When I came to the end I was both satisfied and craving more. I could have easily read a whole book about these two and yet, I felt as if I had! Ms. Firth also gave Guy and Isi cameo appearances that were enough to grab your attention. I'm very much looking forward to the next in the series as I am already vested into those characters as well.

This was Claire Firth's debut (which is hard to believe!) and I say well done!

AWESOME Regency HR 'Debut' by Claire Firth

Nothing I love more that a great hot, steamy Historical Romance (Regency) and this was a little gem that I found free at Amazon.

I loved this story right from the beginning. The flow and the wonderful way in which Ms. Firth described the story, made it an effortless and very enjoyable read.

You will fall in love with our Hero, Ralph, and the lovely heroine, Sophia. Their characters were well rounded and believable and the love scenes between them are hot and steamy. I am so looking forward to reading more from this author and recommend this great story to those, like myself, that love a really well written Regency HR.

Ready for the next story...

I couldn't wait for night to fall so I could put my kids to bed and get started reading this book once I read the description. It's a fairly quick read, more because the story grabs you than because of the length. It's a bit hotter than what I normally read these days, but the author handles those steamy situations with taste and class so that they fit perfectly with the story instead of leaving you completely shocked (okay, so there are those that leave you a bit breathless, but it's an erotic novel! It's supposed to, right?!!!). I found myself thinking about this story and anxious for the next from this author, and I was definitely cheering on the main characters from the beginning, hopeful they would learn to love one another. I adore my happily ever after! Thank you, Claire Firth.

The stunning performance by the Renaissance Theatre Company captures all the color and emotion of Shakespeare's eloquent tragedy of young love. With Samantha Bond as Juliet, Derek Jacobi as Mercutio, and Judi Dench as Nurse, the play, which is set in 16th-century Verona, contains some of the most passionate dialog ever written. An excellent musical score by Patrick Doyle accompanies the actors, as well as a full array of authentic sound effects. The pounding of hooves, the chiming of church bells, and the clashing of angry swords enrich this outstanding listening experience. A 24-page booklet complete with sketches and photos of the actors, a synopsis of the play, and background information is included in the package. Highly recommended for most libraries.

Great Kindle Version

I am a high school English teacher looking at the different versions of classics texts available for Kindle (fire), so my review will not be for the play itself, but rather for the eBook--readability, layout, price, and other features.

This version of Romeo and Juliet is my favorite 99 cent version for several reasons. First, there are links to each act and scene. Next, the page layout is clean and easy to read with spaces between each speaker. Finally, the line formatting is in the correct iambic pentameter format, though there are no line numbers. There are no annotations or explanations, but none of the good 99 cent versions provide that either. Bottom line, easy to use!

Excellent Critical Edition

I am a high-school English teacher, and have been examining the various versions of electronic versions of Romeo and Juliet for my Kindle Fire. I am looking at readability of the text, quality of explanations, another addtional features, and of course, price.

Basic Features: This version features very readable formatting. The lines appear in the correct format (i.e. lines of iambic pentameter), and spaces separate each speaker. There are extensive footnotes, accessable through a link that takes you to a page of footnotes (and an easy to use back to to page link). Line numbers are provided (a very rare feature in electronic version of Shakespeare)!

While the Ignatius Critical Edition is one of the pricier editions of Romeo and Juliet at $5.99, it includes several engaging critical essays, ranging in topic from the language and poetry of Shakespeare in the play to film and stage adaptations to love and politics. These critical essays are likely the reason for the pricing.

My one complaint is that there are no links to Acts or scenes. The menu features links to the introduction, the critical essays, and the play, but there is no subdivision within the play itself. This, however, can be surmounted with the bookmark feature.

Overall, this is one of my favorite e-versions of Romeo and Juliet because of the critical essays and scholarly thought.

While this version is a mere 99 cents, there are better 99 cent versions available. The best feature of this e-version is that there are links to each scene of the play, not just the act, and that there are line numbers on the page. There is annotation, but the layout of said notes is strange.

The Prestwick version does have a very good introduction that gives some useful tips on how to read Shakespeare. This is probably the best feature of this version.

Why did I give it 2 stars? This e-version is simply a scan of the paper copy. The annotations (which appear in the margin of the hard copy) have been cut out and pasted either above or below the text on each page. The size of these explanations is different (larger) than the rest of the text. The way this e-version was made makes it impossible to use the features of an e-reader to your advantage: you can't change the text size, use the dictionary feature, or highlight lines you have selected. (If you want to highlight, you highlight the entire block of text.)

Finally, some of the expanations are inaccurate (I had this gripe when I used Prestwick's paper version in my classroom, too). For instance, at the end of act 2, scene 2, Juliet says she would have Romeo go "no farther than a wanton's bird." Prestwick's note defines wanton as a prostitute. However, wanton has several definitions. In this instance, a wanton is a spoiled, selfish child.

Overall, because of lack of features, I would recommend skipping the Prestwick e-versions of Shakespeare. The introduction with strategies for reading Shakepseare is helpful, but be advised this introduction is the same in all of the Prestwick Shakepseare texts, so you would only need to get one of the plays in this version.)

It is outstanding that we are still reluctant to understand the proper use of grazing, The author is the original founder of "rational grazing" (1957 !!)and even for other non-temperate areas it is still a classic worth reading and rereading, not for nothing is the basis of Holistic Range Management by Savory.

With pretty ordinary grass and pretty ordinary grazing animals

This is the book that started the grazing revolution, the real green revolution in my opinion, as the "official" green revolution initiated by Norman Borlaug isn't so green after all--relying as it does on the seed companies, the mining companies, the chemical companies, etc. With pretty ordinary grass and pretty ordinary grazing animals, one can start really making pasture produce food. So few believe it, and even fewer actually do it. I see all around me 10' tall corn grown where all of it will be chopped up into silage and fed to herds. A food not fit for the animals, but grown because it looks so big and impressive. So much work. Tilling, planting, spraying fertilizer, harvesting, blowing into the silo, rationing it out of the silo, hauling it around. But with some cheap fence, and a little intelligence, the same number of animals could be sustained on itty-bitty ryegrass/bluegrass/white clover pastures that are intensively managed. And the animals wont get so loose that you need to put on your knee high rubber "farm" boots to wade into your "dry lot." Instead, you can put on sandals, or go barefoot. You wont need big silos, big harvesters, big tractors, "steer-stuffers" (silage chopper/blower), silage wagons, and a monthly diesel fuel delivery bill. All you'll have is a littl seed bill and a little fertilizer bill every year and all you'll need is some cheap fence and a pickup or old, cheap tractor, and cheap tools like broadcast seeders, post hole diggers, hammers, fence tools, etc.

This is a good book and a have to read if you want to know about rotational grazing. This is more up to date information out now but this book explains some things the newer books do not.
