Whoooo can resist an owl's eyes?
By TrishR
This is a gorgeous, large format book full of wonderful photographs of owls. I consider it to be a must-have and think that any other birders would heartily agree. It would make an excellent gift for almost anyone of any age. For the generalist, the more than 200 photographs will captivate visually. For the naturalist, the text will add a layer of understanding that is hard to obtain elsewhere. For the traveler, the organization by geographic region gives ideas as to where one might see these magnificent birds. For the photography enthusiast, the Picture Credits on page 288 give the names of the photographers and their agencies and a good place to start looking for more information. Some internet searching quickly leads to additional resources, photos, and ideas. David Tipling selected the photographs and included many from his own outstanding collection. Several photos by Jari Peltomaki also caught my eye. The work of Rick & Nora Bowers distinguishes itself. The book is captivating!

Fantastic photos, very comprehensive and organized
By Doc Stew
If you have interest in owls, you owe it to yourself to get this book. In one word - amazing.
I've always been fascinated by owls, and this book has been an amazing find. It's large (like a coffee table book), hefty, and extremely comprehensive. The photos that are in here are truly amazing - I kept asking myself "how did he shoot these"? There are many owls pictured mid flight, landing, holding critters, eating, etc. The pictures are full page (some are two full pages across) and remarkable.
The book is organized by geographic location (North America, Asia, etc.). Every owl has a picture, stats (wingspan, size, habitat) and at least 2 pages of detailed information. You would think it would get rather boring reading about owls, but I found myself not being able to put it down. Some of these birds are so fascinating that I couldn't believe I'd never seen them before.
This book will live on my coffee table indefinitely. Even for the casual reader, there's something of interest. My 4 year old is riveted by the pictures and keeps "reading" it on her own. I really can't say enough about this book - very highly recommended.

Fantastic Owl Photos
By Herschel Greenberg
The Enigma of the Owl: An Illustrated Natural History is a fantastic book. To be fair, I thought it would be “illustrated” with hand drawings. Alas, it has absolutely beautiful pictures/photos of owls. There is at least one picture for each owl discussed, but many have multiple pictures. The book is big, so you will also get some full page pictures. The text is small and dense. I have only read a small amount of the mass amounts of information. If you were to read this cover to cover, it would take a long time. Instead, my son and I have picked one owl to focus on, and we have started reading about that specific owl. I am guessing that is how most people will read this book. Overall, if you love owls, or just phenomenal pictures, this is a perfect book for you.
