About the Author
John Charles Chasteen is Professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is the highly acclaimed translator of Tulio Halper�n Donghi’s The Contemporary History of Latin America. He is also the author of Heroes on Horseback: The Life and Times of the Last Gaucho Caudillos; National Rhythms, African Roots: The Deep History of Latin American Popular Dance; and Americanos: LatinAmerica’s Struggle for Independence.

Great Overview

Wonderful overview of different ideologies and events in Latin America from the colonial period to the 1900's. Easy to read, understandable, and follows a good structure.

Wouldn't reccomend, not conside to explain the general history of Latin America. ALSO with many errors and issues.

Very disappointing book for the history of Latin America. 2 Stars
1_ No citation in the book (if I recall, I remember one footnote due to a geographical remark that was 70 years ago). This is troubling for me since I had to be skeptical of all intentions of the author and it's claims, since now I have no idea if what he is saying is even accurate, and where did he get this information from. People may say just to look it up and research, but that's the entire point of me purchasing this book.
2_ There is implicit bias and feelings that we can already see about the author in his view on colonialism and white hegemony. Obviously racial politics was a big and important factor for Latin America, but all he does is give examples of violence against indigenous peoples and Africans brought in. It would obvious that this book should have had separate chapters speaking exclusively towards indigenous people and the effects colonialism during the encounter, but the author made it short. It was also a shame how he basically cutted down major battles of the Major Indian Wars in less than five sentences.
I would have loved if this book specialized in solely on indigenous communities and slavery of Africans to better understand the history surrounding. Would have been a lot better, more detailed than that sad half page of the Haitian revolution. It would have allowed the author to speak more about other countries in regards to racial politics, such as the whitening in South America and how the number of black people were dramatically reduced over centuries.
3_ No sense of development explaining how the Latin American countries developed, shaped, influenced, fought, revolted, other than a few facts (don't know where he gets his sources) of the agricultural economy. He literally stated that the wars of independence was a "surprise", without even considering the socio-economic factors as well as the real politik issues facing latin America (especially south America).
4_ This book has a very left leaning opening. Even trying to purify people such as Che Guevara , then outening Fidel as a "not a true communist". It also is referencing an outdated view of dependency theory, which majority of economists today reject since the world is positive sum economics, not zero sum. I do appreciate him giving some expamples of American intervention such as the bananawars in the Dominican Republic, but doesn't give specific reasons on why there was Anti American feelings, nor does it even explain why the US even doing it. It made a real contrast for the US as the "bad guys" while not asking why was the US involved in multiple countries (i'm not defending any position, but the point of a historian is to have an objective point of view)
Over all there were also many other problems with this book, that it would seem pointless to talk about at once. I do give credit for the author trying to establish a historical timeline, but a less than 300 page book won't do it.

Excellent view of history

I generally find history to be boring, so I was pleasantly surprised as I read this text. Well written. Very informative.
